We are looking for an experienced Controller to join a growing marketing and PR organization in Santa Monica, California on a Contract basis. This role will bring structure to the accounting function, strengthen financial accuracy, and establish practical processes that support continued expansion. The ideal candidate will be comfortable stepping into an environment that needs cleanup and organization, while also creating a reliable foundation for future permanent leadership.
Responsibilities:
- Evaluate the current accounting workflow and implement stronger procedures to improve consistency, accuracy, and oversight.
- Lead month-end close activities and ensure financial records are complete, timely, and properly supported.
- Review balance sheet accounts, perform reconciliations, and resolve discrepancies across the general ledger.
- Oversee billing and invoicing operations to improve collection timing and strengthen revenue tracking.
- Build cash forecasting practices that provide clearer visibility into short-term and ongoing financial needs.
- Separate and clarify financial activity between related entities to ensure transactions are recorded correctly.
- Assess the use of QuickBooks and refine accounting processes to create a more scalable operating model.
- Document accounting policies, reporting routines, and internal procedures so a permanent team member can transition into the role effectively.
- Partner with leadership to improve budgeting practices and provide clearer insight into project profitability.
- Proven experience serving in a Controller or senior-level accounting leadership role.
- Strong hands-on knowledge of QuickBooks, including process review and accounting cleanup.
- Demonstrated expertise in month-end close and financial statement preparation.
- Experience with balance sheet account reconciliations and identifying recordkeeping issues.
- Ability to establish accounting controls, formalize procedures, and improve reporting accuracy.
- Background in budgeting, cash forecasting, and financial analysis for growing organizations.
- Comfortable working in a Contract position and stepping into an environment that requires structure and immediate impact.
