We are looking for an experienced Accounting Manager to lead core accounting operations in Birmingham, Alabama. This role is ideal for a hands-on leader who can guide a team, strengthen day-to-day processes, and maintain accuracy across the general ledger and close cycle. The right candidate will be comfortable working in a fast-paced environment, supporting staff development, and partnering on hiring as the team grows.
Responsibilities:
- Lead daily accounting activities while overseeing the integrity of the general ledger, journal entries, and account reconciliations.
- Manage the month-end close process to ensure timely, accurate reporting and consistent adherence to accounting standards.
- Supervise and mentor accounting team members, providing coaching, performance feedback, and development support.
- Identify staffing needs and participate in interviewing and onboarding efforts for additional accounting personnel, including potential staff-level hires.
- Review accounts payable activity and related financial transactions to maintain proper documentation and accuracy.
- Coordinate audit preparation and support financial statement audit requests by organizing schedules, reconciliations, and supporting records.
- Use Excel and other reporting tools to analyze financial data, resolve discrepancies, and improve visibility into results.
- Adapt to shifting priorities and multiple concurrent deadlines while helping the department operate effectively in a dynamic environment.
- At least 5 years of experience in an accounting leadership role with responsibility for managing accounting operations.
- Proven direct supervisory experience with a track record of leading, coaching, and developing team members.
- Strong background in month-end close, general ledger management, journal entries, and account reconciliation.
- Experience supporting financial statement audits and preparing accurate documentation for external review.
- Working knowledge of accounts payable processes and their impact on financial reporting.
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel for analysis, reporting, and reconciliation tasks.
- Ability to succeed in a fast-moving environment that requires flexibility, sound judgment, and strong organizational skills.
