Emergency Department CoderThe Emergency Department Coder is responsible for reviewing and coding ED encounters through a centralized work queue. This role focuses primarily on ICD-10-CM diagnosis coding and ensures accurate code assignment in accordance with organizational policies, coding guidelines, and regulatory standards.Key Responsibilities
- Review and code Emergency Department encounters through an Epic work queue.
- Assign accurate ICD-10-CM diagnosis codes for ED visits.
- Process encounters according to established priority guidelines, including aged and high-dollar accounts.
- Perform limited procedure coding for ED patients who undergo procedures such as surgeries or endoscopies but are discharged from the ED.
- Review medical necessity and CCI edits encountered during the coding process.
- Research and resolve coding edits, documenting findings within the patient account when appropriate.
- Apply facility coding guidelines and departmental standards to ensure compliance.
- Utilize computer-assisted coding technology and encoder tools to support coding accuracy.
- Maintain communication with team members and leadership regarding coding questions, workflow concerns, and account issues.
