An established Hudson Valley construction firm is seeking a Contract Staff Accountant to join its finance team. This contract opportunity will support project accounting, financial reporting, and operational accounting functions. The ideal candidate will be highly analytical, possess strong Excel skills, and have prior experience managing the accounting complexities associated with construction projects.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare and review journal entries and general ledger transactions.
- Complete monthly account reconciliations and variance analysis.
- Support project cost tracking and cost allocation processes.
- Maintain job cost reports and assist with project profitability analysis.
- Assist with billing activities, including AIA and progress billings.
- Monitor change orders, contract values, and retainage balances.
- Support WIP schedule preparation and revenue recognition.
- Assist with annual audits and tax reporting requirements.
- Work closely with operations and project management teams.
- Recommend process improvements and strengthen internal controls.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business.
- 3+ years of accounting experience.
- Construction accounting experience strongly preferred.
- Experience with job costing, project accounting, and WIP reporting.
- Familiarity with AIA billing, retainage, and percentage-of-completion accounting.
- Experience with Sage, Foundation, CMiC, Viewpoint, or other construction accounting software.
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
- Ability to work independently in a deadline-driven environment and quickly contribute in a contract capacity.
Preferred Experience
- Commercial construction, heavy civil, site development, infrastructure, or general contracting experience.
- Experience supporting multiple concurrent construction projects.
- Exposure to union payroll, certified payroll reporting, and prevailing wage projects.
- Experience working with bonded projects and contract compliance requirements.
- Public accounting or audit experience is a plus.
