Required Skills & Experience
5+ years of experience in backend software engineering, with strong emphasis on Java development. Hands-on experience building applications with Spring Boot. Experience developing and deploying solutions in Google Cloud Platform (GCP). Practical experience working with AI-enabled applications, preferably in production environments rather than only proof-of-concept work.
Exposure to or hands-on experience with:
Large Language Models (LLMs) Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) Agentic workflows / agent-based architectures
Experience building or supporting event-driven systems and distributed backend architectures. Ability to operate effectively in a collaborative, less structured environment where problem-solving, initiative, and independent thinking are critical. Strong communication skills with the ability to partner across technical teams and influence broader adoption of new capabilities. Experience working in a regulated industry, such as healthcare or financial services.

JOB DESCRIPTION
Position Overview We are seeking a Senior Java Developer with AI experience to help build and scale enterprise-grade agentic AI solutions within a highly regulated environment. This individual will play a key role in extending an existing AI infrastructure - including orchestration, testing, and evaluation frameworks - and partnering with feature teams to build targeted, single-purpose AI agents across domains such as nutrition, scheduling, and education. This is not a traditional delivery role. The right candidate will be a strong backend engineer first, with hands-on experience developing in Java/Spring Boot within GCP, along with practical exposure to LLMs, RAG, and agentic workflows in an enterprise setting. This person should be comfortable working in an emerging, highly collaborative environment where they are expected to think independently, contribute ideas, and help shape how AI capabilities scale across the broader organization. This role will work closely with technical leadership, including Tech Lead Garrett Johnson, to support and expand the AI platform while enabling additional teams - including offshore resources - to contribute to future agent development.
Key Responsibilities
Design, develop, and enhance backend services using Java and Spring Boot within a Google Cloud Platform (GCP) environment. Support and extend the organization’s existing AI infrastructure, including orchestration engines and testing/evaluation frameworks. Build and enable agentic AI workflows, with a focus on scalable, event-driven architectures and single-purpose agents. Partner with feature teams to develop new AI agents for use cases such as nutrition, scheduling, education, and other domain-specific functions. Help operationalize AI capabilities so they can be adopted beyond the innovation team and scaled across the broader engineering organization. Collaborate closely with engineering leadership and cross-functional teams in a highly iterative, non-traditional development environment. Contribute technical thought leadership rather than simply executing against handed-down requirements. Support the design and implementation of AI solutions that interact with internal enterprise data within a regulated industry setting. Help establish best practices for productionizing AI/ML capabilities, including governance, maintainability, and long-term scalability. Serve as a key contributor in expanding team capabilities, including collaboration with offshore development resources.

Hourly rate is $70-80/HR and dependent upon experience.
