Job Description
Build and scale the substation construction organization, including developing the leadership structure and hiring key operational, project management, and field personnel. Provide executive leadership for greenfield and brownfield substation construction projects, expansions, upgrades, and retrofit work. Lead and develop project managers, construction managers, superintendents, general foremen, foremen, field crews, and supporting operations personnel. Own overall field operations and ensure projects are executed safely, on schedule, within budget, and to customer expectations. Partner closely with the dedicated preconstruction department throughout project planning and handoff. Understand the preconstruction process, provide construction and constructability input, and ensure strong alignment between preconstruction and field operations before execution begins. Review project scope, constructability, schedules, resource requirements, procurement considerations, and execution plans with the preconstruction team to identify potential field challenges before mobilization. Oversee the construction lifecycle following preconstruction handoff, including mobilization, scheduling, procurement coordination, field construction, testing/commissioning coordination, turnover, and closeout. Provide operational oversight for major substation scopes including site/civil work, foundations, structural steel, grounding, conduit, cable, bus, transformers, breakers, switches, control buildings, and associated electrical construction. Establish scalable processes, standards, and operating procedures as the organization grows. Partner closely with engineering, preconstruction, estimating, procurement, project management, safety, quality, and executive leadership. Work effectively across Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) environments and ensure strong coordination between engineering, preconstruction, and field construction. Manage manpower planning, crew utilization, equipment needs, subcontractors, construction schedules, and project resources across multiple concurrent projects. Provide executive oversight of project financial performance, including budgets, forecasts, cost controls, productivity, change management, and overall project profitability. Identify project risks early and lead corrective action when projects encounter schedule, cost, safety, quality, or resource challenges. Establish a strong culture of safety, accountability, operational excellence, and quality throughout the field organization. Build and maintain executive-level relationships with electric utilities and other power-delivery customers. Participate in customer meetings, project pursuits, proposal strategy, contract discussions, and business-development efforts. Partner with leadership to identify opportunities to expand the company's substation construction footprint and utility customer base. Recruit, mentor, develop, and retain high-performing construction and operations leaders. Serve as a senior escalation point for customers and internal leadership on major operational or field-related issues.
