Position Title: Construction Controller
Salary Range: $125,000-$165,000/ Year DOE
About:
An established, family-owned construction company is seeking a hands-on, versatile Construction Controller to take the lead on its accounting and financial operations while overseeing key HR and administrative functions. This is an exciting opportunity to step into a highly influential role, taking over from a long-tenured Controller who will provide a comprehensive transition and training period. You will oversee day-to-day accounting, financial reporting, construction project accounting, cash management, payroll oversight, insurance renewals, and employee administration for a close-knit team of approximately 25 employees. Working directly with company ownership, you will have the autonomy to improve processes, strengthen financial operations, and potentially help modernize the company's accounting systems. For the right candidate, there may also be an opportunity to grow into a CFO-level position. The ideal candidate is a well-rounded accounting professional who enjoys wearing multiple hats, thrives in a small-company environment, and brings a hands-on, team-oriented approach with strong communication skills and a track record of long-term career commitment!
Responsibilities:
- Oversee all day-to-day accounting operations, including general ledger, month-end and year-end close, financial statements, reconciliations, and internal controls
- Manage construction accounting activities, including project cost tracking, job profitability, AIA billing, budgeting, forecasting, and financial reporting
- Supervise accounts payable, accounts receivable, billing, and bookkeeping functions while overseeing cash flow, banking relationships, payment approvals, and financial controls
- Oversee payroll accounting, employee benefits administration, union deductions, 401(k) reconciliations, onboarding, offboarding, PTO tracking, and general HR administration
- Manage company insurance renewals, including general liability, umbrella, and workers' compensation, while ensuring construction project insurance compliance and regulatory filings
- Serve as the primary liaison with external CPAs, auditors, insurance providers, banks, and union representatives while supporting audits, tax filings, and compliance requirements
- Identify opportunities to streamline accounting processes, improve internal controls, and support a potential transition from Sage 300 to a more effective accounting platform
Requirements:
- 7–10 years of progressive accounting and financial management experience
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field preferred; equivalent practical experience will be considered
- Previous hands-on experience in a small or midsize company, ideally overseeing multiple accounting and administrative functions
- Strong knowledge of general accounting principles, financial reporting, month-end close, and general ledger management
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel, with strong Outlook skills and the ability to navigate accounting systems
- Construction accounting experience, including AIA billing, project cost accounting, union payroll, or construction insurance renewals, is a plus
- Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills with the ability to work independently, lead a small team, and manage competing priorities
Benefits:
- Discretionary annual bonus opportunity based on company and individual performance
- Medical coverage with 100% of employee and family medical premiums covered by the company
- Dental, vision, HSA availability
- Company 401(k) contribution
- 11 paid company holidays and 7 sick days + PTO
- Hybrid work schedule
- Opportunity to work directly with company ownership, influence business operations, and potentially grow into a CFO-level role
