Collection Agent
Berlin-Wheeler, Inc. | Topeka, KS | Professional Services Since 1951
Job Type: Full-time | Pay: $14hr | Schedule: M – F 8am – 5pm | Experience: Entry level / collections experience preferred, not necessary
Work That Helps People and Keeps Businesses Open
Many people hear "collections" and imagine pressure tactics or aggressive sales. That is not how we operate. At Berlin-Wheeler, collections is about helping people understand their options, resolve their accounts, and move forward with confidence.
Every account you resolve also matters to the organization on the other end. Our clients, many of them healthcare providers, count on us to help them recover what they are owed so they can pay their staff, serve their communities, and keep their doors open.
Why This Role Matters
- You help our clients keep their doors open. Your work supports the businesses and organizations that people in their communities depend on.
- You help consumers and patients reach their financial goals. You will listen, explain balances clearly, and walk people through payment options that fit their situation, so they can resolve accounts and move forward with confidence.
- You are a professional, not a pressure-seller. We train you in service first, with active listening, empathy, and clear communication.
What You Will Do
- Make and take calls with consumers and patients, verifying basic demographic information and discussing account status.
- Listen to each person's situation and offer appropriate payment arrangements and resolution options.
- Convert conversations into payments through honest, respectful communication.
- Document every account accurately and follow established policies and procedures.
- Work with your team and leadership to set goals, build your skills, and grow.
Our Commitment to Doing It the Right Way
We believe results and compliance go hand in hand. Every interaction is guided by federal, state, and client requirements, and we provide ongoing training, monitoring, and coaching to ensure we always do the right thing.
- Comprehensive training on compliance, including HIPAA, TCPA, and federal, state, and local requirements to name a few.
- Quality and compliance monitoring, including speech analytics review of calls, plus ongoing coaching.
- A culture where doing the right thing always comes first. Compliance is part of the job, not an afterthought.
What Makes You a Great Fit
You do not need a collections background. We are looking for someone who is dependable, empathetic, and willing to learn. You will be a strong fit if you:
- Have a high school diploma or GED equivalent.
- Communicate clearly and professionally, both verbally and in writing.
- Are a good listener who can stay calm, patient, and respectful in difficult conversations.
- Are comfortable using a computer and phone system and learning new tools.
- Take pride in following rules, processes, and details.
- Customer service experience is preferred but not required.
What We Offer
- Paid training and a supportive team. No collection experience? No problem. We provide comprehensive paid training that teaches you the systems, regulations, communication skills, and account resolution techniques needed to succeed.
- A stable company with a long history. We have served clients since 1951.
- Opportunities to grow your skills and advance as we promote from within whenever possible.
- Health, Vision and Dental insurance options and earned time off, plus more!
