Course Description:
Eleventh-grade science is an innovative, activity-driven, general biology curriculum. This course makes frequent use of human examples to engage students in the fundamental concepts of biology. Content is presented in ways that demonstrate biological interconnections, permitting in-depth explorations of life and establishing relevance to students’ lives. The laboratory component is designed to be inquiry-based and reinforce topics discussed in the curriculum. Many labs are already established and documented, making it easy for the candidate to embrace hands-on work, but candidates with prior experience with good laboratory activities are invited to bring their own hands-on activity to the class. Topics of study include: 1) Macromolecules, 2) cellular organelles and structure, 3) cell growth and development (including stem cells), 4) DNA and RNA (transcription and translation), 5) Genetics (simple and non-Mendelian inheritance patterns), 5) evolution and intelligent design (taught from a Biblical worldview); 6) Microbes (viruses and bacteria), 7) Plants (photosynthesis and taxonomy), and 8) animals (cellular respiration and taxonomy).
