The Manufacturing Support Specialist coordinates and manages the subcontracting of machining, fabrication, assembly, electrical, and special-process work. The role serves as the key liaison between suppliers and Engineering, Quality, Supply Chain, Scheduling, and other internal organizations, ensuring outsourced work is technically accurate, delivered on schedule, and compliant with all applicable quality and engineering requirements. The Manufacturing Support Specialist prepares Statements of Work, reviews supplier data packages for completeness and accuracy, resolves technical, quality, and schedule issues directly with suppliers, and serves as the primary point of contact for specialized manufacturing processes. The role also supports the selection and qualification of new suppliers and subcontractors.
Success depends on strong technical knowledge, the ability to interpret engineering drawings and technical specifications, and hands-on familiarity with manufacturing and assembly processes. The role sits within MDO and coordinates closely with Manufacturing Engineering, Design Engineering, Quality, Supply Chain, Scheduling, and the production floor.
Responsibilities
- Coordinate and manage subcontracted manufacturing and assembly. Manage outsourced machined and sheet-metal parts, electrical assemblies, cable harnesses, panel, enclosure, and mechanical assemblies, and ensure outsourced work is performed in accordance with drawings, specifications, purchase requirements, and applicable quality standards.
- Prepare Statements of Work and review supplier data packages. Identify manufacturing work appropriate for external suppliers, prepare clear and complete Statements of Work (SOW), and verify that supplier data packages are complete, accurate, and suitable for production.
- Serve as primary point of contact for special processes. Own vendor operations for specialized processes including heat treating, plating and surface treatment, Non-Destructive Testing (dye penetrant, magnetic particle, and eddy current), welding, special coatings, and silk screening.
- Resolve supplier technical, quality, and schedule issues. Work directly with suppliers to resolve manufacturing, quality, and schedule-related problems, assist in resolving supplier nonconformances, and coordinate ADSUBCON activities and returns to vendors.
- Coordinate across functions. Interface with Design Engineering, Quality, Supply Chain, and Scheduling to resolve technical and manufacturing issues, provide manufacturing input during design and peer reviews, and work with Scheduling to identify work that can be subcontracted to improve capacity, cost, or delivery.
- Support supplier selection, qualification, and continuous improvement. Partner with Supply Chain to identify, evaluate, and onboard qualified suppliers and subcontractors, and support continuous improvement of outsourced manufacturing processes and supplier performance.
