This role is based in our Monrovia, CA, and we have an in-office expectation of 5 days a week.
The Information Technology Crew reflects Trader Joe’s unique corporate culture through a commitment to quality, service, high performance, responsiveness, and results. The team has worked diligently to improve system stability, resiliency, and security while building trust with stakeholders and establishing a foundation for continued store growth.
We are seeking a highly skilled and results-driven Cloud Platform Engineer to design, build, and improve standardized cloud and hybrid platform capabilities supporting Trader Joe’s technology environments. Reporting to the Senior Manager, Infrastructure and Cloud Engineering, this hands-on engineering role will help make infrastructure and cloud services more secure, repeatable, supportable, and efficient through practical engineering standards, infrastructure as code, automation, and reusable service patterns.
A key priority is advancing Platform Engineering maturity across IT by working with Cloud Engineering, Core Infrastructure and Networking, Development, DevOps, Cybersecurity, Architecture, Enterprise Datacenter Operations, and external technology partners. The Engineer will connect existing team capabilities into consistent end-to-end delivery workflows, embedding security and operational guardrails while preserving established service ownership and accountability.
The role will follow a deliberate progression of Standardize, Simplify, Automate, Self-Service, Measure, and Kaizen. Success will be measured through improvements in service delivery consistency, automation, reliability, engineering efficiency, cost visibility, and the reduction of manual handoffs and rework.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Cloud Platform Engineering and Standardization
- Design, engineer, and maintain reusable cloud and hybrid platform services, primarily within Microsoft Azure, using established architecture, security, and operational standards.
- Partner with service-owning teams to define standardized platform patterns, technical prerequisites, dependencies, approvals, documentation, and support requirements for repeatable delivery.
- Apply infrastructure as code, version control, and configuration standards to improve consistency, traceability, scalability, and lifecycle management of cloud resources.
- Embed identity and access controls, network connectivity, monitoring, backup, resiliency, and operational readiness into platform patterns in collaboration with accountable teams.
Automation, Integration, and Self-Service
- Standardize and simplify existing service delivery workflows before introducing automation, reducing unnecessary complexity, manual handoffs, and inconsistent implementations.
- Build and improve automation using tools such as Terraform, PowerShell, Python, Git, APIs, and CI/CD pipelines to enable repeatable infrastructure provisioning and change delivery.
- Develop governed self-service capabilities for common cloud and infrastructure requests, with appropriate approvals, security guardrails, ownership, and cost controls.
- Integrate platform workflows across Cloud Engineering, Infrastructure, Network, DevOps, Cybersecurity, Architecture, Operations, and external technology partners without displacing existing service ownership.
Measurement, FinOps, and Continuous Improvement
- Instrument end-to-end service delivery processes to measure processing time, wait time, handoffs, rework, fulfillment performance, and service-level outcomes.
- Analyze delivery metrics, user feedback, and operational trends to identify bottlenecks, prioritize improvements, and demonstrate measurable gains in efficiency and quality.
- Collaborate with Cloud Engineering and financial stakeholders to improve cloud cost visibility, tagging and allocation, utilization, right-sizing, and consumption accountability through FinOps practices.
- Drive continuous improvement and Kaizen through documentation, technical guidance, reusable patterns, and knowledge sharing that increase engineering capacity and platform adoption.
Qualifications
- 5+ years of progressive experience in cloud engineering, infrastructure engineering, DevOps, platform engineering, or related enterprise IT disciplines.
- Strong hands-on experience with Microsoft Azure, hybrid infrastructure integration, and cloud infrastructure services, including compute, networking, storage, identity, and access management.
- Practical experience designing and maintaining infrastructure as code, automated provisioning, reusable engineering patterns, and CI/CD delivery workflows.
- Proficiency with technologies such as Terraform, PowerShell, Python, Git, APIs, and enterprise automation tooling.
- Experience collaborating across Cloud, Infrastructure, Network, Development, DevOps, Cybersecurity, Architecture, and Operations to deliver secure and supportable services.
- Understanding of platform security guardrails, change governance, observability, resiliency, backup, and production operational readiness.
- Ability to define and use workflow measures, service-level indicators, and operational data to identify bottlenecks and drive measurable improvement.
- Working knowledge of FinOps principles, including cost visibility, resource allocation, utilization, right-sizing, and cloud consumption optimization.
- Strong analytical, troubleshooting, documentation, and communication skills, with the ability to influence technical outcomes without direct management authority.
- Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent experience. Relevant Azure, Terraform, DevOps, or cloud certifications are a plus.
