Maintenance Mechanic – Railroad Shop

Strasburg Rail Road is known worldwide for steam railroading, and our Mechanical Shop restores and maintains steam locomotives and rail equipment for customers across the country. Behind every one of those projects is a shop full of machinery, tools, and equipment that has to run right. That's where you come in.
We're looking for a hands-on Maintenance Mechanic to keep our shop running, reporting to the Mechanical Shop Superintendent. If you like diagnosing problems, fabricating parts, and working on a wide variety of equipment, and you bring a positive attitude and a desire to learn, we'd love to hear from you.
What You'll Do
- Inspect, maintain, and repair shop machinery, power tools, hand tools, and equipment.
- Diagnose problems and carry out efficient, lasting repairs.
- Fabricate parts to specified dimensions and tolerances using machine tools, welders, cutting torches, plasma cutters, and other metalworking equipment.
- Remove and replace defective parts using overhead cranes and other lifting equipment.
- Operate forklifts, telehandlers, skid-steer loaders, and backhoes.
- Maintain inventory of lubricants, spare parts, and supplies, and request materials before they run out.
- Keep records of equipment purchases, inspections, service, and repairs.

Requirements:
- One or more years of hands-on trade experience.
- Foundational skills with welding, cutting, and fabrication tools, plus basic machine tools (band saws and manual lathes and mills) and hand and power tools.
- Ability to read and work from simple mechanical drawings.
- Working knowledge of shop math, including measurements, angles, and basic geometry.
- Willingness to work at heights on ladders, scaffolds, manlifts, or on top of rail equipment.
- Valid driver's license.
Schedule & Work Environment
- Full-time, minimum 40 hours per week. Regular shop hours are 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM, with variations based on projects and priorities.
- Occasional evening, weekend, or holiday work as needed.
- Mostly indoor work, with occasional outdoor work in all weather and seasons.
- Frequent exposure to soot, dust, oil, paint, and other shop substances, plus occasional extreme heat or cold.
- Company-provided PPE required in the shop.
- Extended periods of walking or standing, and frequent lifting of more than 50 pounds.
- Regular interaction with team members, customers, and vendors.
- Employment may be subject to a background check and pre-employment and random drug testing.
