Our client is seeking a Lead Business Intelligence Engineer to own and evolve enterprise Power BI semantic models while contributing to the continued development of its cloud data warehouse.
This is a senior, hands-on individual-contributor role that combines Power BI semantic-model engineering, dimensional data modeling, AI-assisted development, and technical leadership.
The ideal candidate has substantial experience building and maintaining production BI solutions, understands how data moves from source systems through the warehouse and semantic layer, and can independently make and explain technical design decisions.
A distinguishing aspect of this opportunity is the client's AI-first engineering environment. The team uses Claude Code and related agentic development tools as part of its standard workflow. The successful candidate must be comfortable developing through AI-assisted, code-first processes while maintaining responsibility for code quality, architectural decisions, testing, and production reliability.
Key Responsibilities
Power BI Semantic-Model Engineering
• Own the ongoing design, maintenance, performance, and evolution of enterprise Power BI semantic models.
• Develop and maintain models using TMDL/Model.bim, Tabular Editor, DAX, Power Query M, and Git-based source control.
• Design and optimize relationships, measures, calculations, and model structures to support complex business reporting requirements.
• Diagnose and resolve semantic-model performance, data-quality, refresh, and calculation issues.
• Implement and maintain row-level security (RLS), workspace permissions, and appropriate model security.
• Maintain consistency between Power BI semantic models and upstream warehouse structures.
• Support report developers and business users through technical guidance, troubleshooting, and documentation.
AI-First Development and Automation
• Use Claude Code or comparable agentic coding tools as a primary development interface for BI and data engineering work.
• Work within a code-first, multi-repository environment using repository-level instructions, reusable development skills, validation scripts, and integrated tooling.
• Use agent-assisted workflows to develop and modify TMDL, DAX, semantic-model definitions, and related data engineering artifacts.
• Review AI-generated code and configuration changes for accuracy, performance, maintainability, and security.
• Validate changes through testing, source control, code review, and established deployment processes.
• Contribute to reusable agent skills, development instructions, and automation practices that improve engineering consistency and productivity.
• Collaborate with engineers using MCP-connected tools and agent orchestration to evaluate dependencies and cross-repository impacts.
Cloud Data Warehousing and Dimensional Modeling
• Collaborate with data engineering to develop and extend dimensional data models in Snowflake.
• Contribute to GOLD-layer facts, dimensions, views, and dynamic tables supporting enterprise reporting.
• Apply Kimball dimensional modeling principles, including fact-table grain, dimensional relationships, surrogate keys, and appropriate historical data handling.
• Develop and optimize SQL used in warehouse transformations, analytical datasets, and semantic-model integration.
• Understand upstream ingestion and transformation processes and their downstream impact on Power BI.
• Assess the effect of warehouse schema changes on semantic models, DAX calculations, reports, and dependent business processes.
The position contributes to the warehouse alongside the data engineering team; it does not independently own the entire data warehouse.
Power BI Governance and AI Readiness
• Support Power BI workspace organization, naming standards, permissions, lifecycle management, and deployment practices.
• Maintain model documentation, consistent business terminology, and reusable development standards.
• Optimize semantic models for Power BI Copilot and natural-language analytics through meaningful metadata, descriptions, relationships, synonyms, and model organization.
• Evaluate and improve the accuracy of AI-generated analytical responses by strengthening the underlying semantic layer.
• Promote consistent security, governance, and maintainability across the BI environment.
Technical Leadership and Collaboration
• Serve as a hands-on technical resource for semantic-model architecture, data modeling, and BI engineering practices.
• Collaborate with data engineers, software engineers, report developers, and business stakeholders.
• Explain architectural decisions, technical tradeoffs, dependencies, and implementation approaches.
• Establish and document reusable development patterns and standards.
• Mentor other team members in semantic modeling, BI engineering, and AI-assisted development practices.
• Take ownership of technical deliverables from design through implementation, validation, and production support.
This is a technical leadership position rather than a people-management role.
Required Qualifications
• 7+ years of professional experience in business intelligence, analytics engineering, or related data engineering disciplines.
• 3+ years of substantial hands-on Power BI semantic-model development and maintenance, beyond report or dashboard creation.
• Advanced proficiency with DAX, Power Query M, relationships, model design, and performance optimization.
• Hands-on experience with TMDL, Model.bim, Tabular Editor, or equivalent code-based Microsoft Tabular model development.
• Strong SQL skills and production experience with dimensional data modeling.
• Demonstrated application of Kimball modeling principles, including fact tables, dimensions, star schemas, and appropriate data grain.
• Experience developing or maintaining dimensional models in a cloud data warehouse such as Snowflake, Azure Synapse, Databricks, or a comparable platform.
• Hands-on experience with Claude Code or comparable agentic coding tools as part of a development workflow, including reviewing, testing, and validating AI-generated changes.
• Experience with Git-based development, source control, and structured deployment practices.
• Experience implementing Power BI security and supporting workspace administration or governance.
• Understanding of how semantic-model design, metadata, and relationships affect Power BI Copilot or similar natural-language analytics capabilities.
• Ability to explain end-to-end data architecture, including source data, ingestion, transformation, warehouse models, semantic models, and reporting consumption.
• Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot production issues and take ownership of technical decisions and deliverables.
• Strong communication and collaboration skills with both technical and nontechnical stakeholders.
Preferred Qualifications
• Production experience with Snowflake, including dimensional modeling and GOLD-layer development.
• Experience building or maintaining reusable Claude Code skills, MCP integrations, agent instructions, or sub-agent workflows.
• Experience using agentic development tools across multiple repositories.
• Experience with Power BI Project (PBIP), Power BI REST APIs, Fabric APIs, or deployment automation.
• Familiarity with GitHub Actions, CI/CD pipelines, and automated BI validation.
• Experience with SSAS Tabular, SSRS modernization, or migration from legacy Microsoft BI environments.
• Experience with Microsoft Fabric, Azure Data Factory, or similar data integration technologies.
• Experience optimizing Power BI semantic models for Copilot or conversational BI.
• Experience in financial services, financial reporting, nonprofit organizations, or other data-intensive business environments.
What Success Looks Like
The successful candidate will:
• Take ownership of existing Power BI semantic models and confidently manage their continued evolution.
• Understand the architecture and dependencies connecting warehouse data to business reporting.
• Deliver reliable, maintainable semantic-model changes using AI-assisted, code-first development practices.
• Contribute effectively to dimensional warehouse enhancements in partnership with data engineering.
• Improve semantic-model performance, security, documentation, and governance.
• Help advance the team's AI-assisted development practices while maintaining appropriate technical validation and production standards.
• Provide practical technical guidance to colleagues and communicate clearly with business stakeholders.
