The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) is a major state agency responsible for maintaining one of the nation’s largest transportation networks. With a mission to provide a safe, accessible, well maintained, and future ready transportation system, ODOT supports the state highway system and advances transportation initiatives across Ohio.
ODOT manages and maintains all state and federal highways outside of municipalities, as well as all interstates except the Ohio Turnpike. As an enterprise exceeding $3 billion annually, the Department dedicates most of its resources to preserving the existing system through maintenance, construction, and snow and ice operations.
Our core objectives are to: • Take care of what we have – preserve and maintain the existing infrastructure. • Make our system work better – optimize performance and efficiency. • Improve safety – minimize crashes and enhance traveler security. • Enhance capacity – support growth and future transportation needs.
Nearly 5,000 ODOT employees carry out a wide range of responsibilities, including: • Infrastructure Maintenance & Construction – upkeep of highways, bridges, and roadways statewide • Traffic Management – oversee traffic flow, advisories, and statewide operations. • Snow & Ice Operations – ensure road safety during winter weather. • Communications – keep the public informed via traffic advisories, online tools, and real-time updates. • Business & Contracting – manage heavy highway bid opportunities, consultant services, manuals, and permits
ODOT is led by a Director with cabinet-level authority. Its organizational structure includes divisions dedicated to engineering, field operations, planning, policy, workforce development, construction, finance, information technology, human resources, communications, and executive affairs. Together, these teams work to deliver a transportation system that meets the needs of Ohio’s traveling public.
