About the Role
We are seeking a Senior Software Engineer / Technical Lead - Adobe Commerce & Integrations to help architect, evolve, and operate our enterprise e-commerce platform and its ecosystem of business-critical integrations.
This is a hands-on technical leadership role for an experienced engineer who excels at solving complex operational challenges, designing resilient integrations, enforcing modern engineering standards, and elevating the capabilities of an engineering team.
A primary focus of this role is leading backend architecture, performance optimization, and operational reliability on Adobe Commerce (Magento 2.4+), alongside designing the integration pipelines that connect our storefront directly to our enterprise systems. Our broader technology stack includes ERP, CRM, marketing automation, vendor networks, and external services connected through APIs. Our environment currently features Microsoft Dynamics GP, Magento, and HubSpot, with Dynamics GP planned to transition to Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central.
The successful candidate does not need to be an expert in every individual tool across our enterprise. We are seeking someone with strong software engineering fundamentals, deep and proven Adobe Commerce / Magento 2 backend architecture experience, and a track record of building resilient integrations between transactional storefronts and core enterprise platforms. While our storefront runs on Adobe Commerce on Cloud (PaaS), we strongly welcome applications from master Magento 2 architects whose background is primarily in Microsoft Azure, AWS, Docker, or enterprise on-premise hosting. True Magento architectural mastery, clean module design, and systems integration expertise are what matter most; we will fully support your onboarding to Adobe Cloud-specific tooling.
This position combines active code contribution with technical leadership. You will remain hands-on in the codebase while shaping architecture, instituting automated testing and code-quality gates, guiding sprint delivery, and mentoring internal developers and external agency partners.
Responsibilities
What You'll Do
Adobe Commerce & Platform Engineering
- Lead backend architecture, module development, customization, and maintenance on Adobe Commerce (Magento 2.4+).
- Design clean, decoupled custom modules following Adobe best practices (dependency injection, plugins/interceptors, service contracts, declarative schema).
- Oversee platform deployment lifecycles, environment configurations, and build/deploy processes on Adobe Commerce Cloud.
- Configure, tune, and troubleshoot core platform infrastructure dependencies including Fastly / Varnish caching, Redis cache and session management, OpenSearch/Elasticsearch, and RabbitMQ message brokers.
- Lead version upgrades, security patch implementations (Quality Patches Tool), and technical health audits to minimize technical debt and security vulnerabilities.
- Ensure optimal application performance, Core Web Vitals compliance, efficient indexing, and checkout transaction throughput.
- Enforce strict code governance across third-party marketplace extensions to prevent performance bottlenecks, security vulnerabilities, or upgrade conflicts.
- Collaborate with infrastructure teams to optimize platform hosting on Microsoft Azure, including media storage, networking, and cloud resource provisioning.
Systems Integration & Data Synchronization
- Architect, build, and support high-reliability integrations connecting Adobe Commerce with ERP (Microsoft Dynamics GP and Dynamics 365 Business Central), CRM, marketing automation (HubSpot), payment gateways, tax calculation engines, and fulfillment providers.
- Implement integration flows utilizing Adobe Commerce asynchronous and bulk APIs, REST/GraphQL endpoints, webhooks, and event-driven patterns.
- Design resilient integration pipelines with idempotency, robust queue processing, automated retries, failure reconciliation, and comprehensive audit trails.
- Establish centralized logging, application monitoring, and real-time alerting for storefront health and data-sync failures.
- Partner with ERP and martech teams to establish clear system-of-record boundaries and data governance rules across products, inventory, customer records, contract pricing, and orders.
- Leverage secure enterprise networking patterns (e.g., Azure Private Link, secure service bus/queues, and API gateways) to establish low-latency, private connectivity between Adobe Commerce and internal Microsoft Dynamics ERP services.
Technical Leadership & Governance
- Provide hands-on technical leadership to a small-to-medium development team (including internal developers and specialized agency partners) while contributing directly to production code.
- Translate business and commercial requirements into scalable technical architectures, detailed implementation plans, and clear technical tickets.
- Conduct thorough, constructive code reviews and enforce strict engineering standards, PSR compliance, and Magento marketplace coding guidelines.
- Identify architectural bottlenecks, integration risks, and operational dependencies early in the project lifecycle.
- Mentor engineers, foster engineering best practices, and lead technical post-mortems for production or data synchronization incidents.
Agile Delivery & Collaboration
- Actively participate in Agile ceremonies, including sprint planning, backlog refinement, estimation, daily stand-ups, and retrospectives.
- Collaborate closely with product managers, digital leadership, infrastructure teams, and vendor engineering groups to ensure alignment on milestones and technical feasibility.
- Translate intricate business logic into clear technical specs, acceptance criteria, and Definition of Done standards.
- Clearly articulate technical tradeoffs, risk assessments, and architectural decisions to technical peers and executive business stakeholders.
Quality, Security & Operations
- Champion automated testing practices, including PHPUnit unit and integration tests, API verification, and operational health checks.
- Maintain structured, automated CI/CD pipelines supporting seamless branching, testing, staging, and zero-downtime production deployments.
- Ensure strict compliance with secure development standards, PCI-DSS requirements, role-based access control, input validation, and secure credential handling.
- Maintain comprehensive observability over platform transactions, API rate limits, and synchronization health using APM and log-management tools.
AI-Assisted Software Development
We view AI-assisted development tools as a valuable component of modern engineering workflows. We welcome engineers who responsibly leverage AI to improve productivity, code quality, and delivery speed.
Potential applications include:
- Accelerating boilerplate generation for modules, XML schema definitions ('di.xml', 'layout.xml'), and data patches.
- Generating unit and integration test coverage.
- Parsing and diagnosing complex error logs, deploy scripts, and stack traces.
- Accelerating documentation and code comprehension across large, inherited codebases.
