Original job description

Take Charge of Your Career at Interstates

At Interstates, we don't just show up to work, we show up for each other. From our headquarters in Iowa to job sites across the country, we're doing award-winning electrical, controls, automation, and OT work that powers industrial facilities for clients here in the U.S. and around the world. Whether you're bending conduit, wiring panels, writing code, supporting projects, or helping things run behind the scenes, you'll be part of a crew that works hard, shares laughs, and takes pride in doing quality work. We believe in building strong teams, doing the right thing, and making a difference in the communities where we live. If you want to grow and do meaningful work, you'll feel at home here.

This position is not eligible for visa sponsorship. Candidates must be authorized to work for any U.S. employer without restriction.

The Data Engineer builds and maintains the data foundation that powers dashboards, analytics, and data products across Interstates. This role integrates, transforms, models, and validates data from multiple sources while partnering with analysts, developers, and operational teams to create reliable, reusable data solutions.

Monitor and improve data quality, validation, and reliability.
Support data integrations, APIs, and data orchestration.
Work with OT, manufacturing, and industrial data systems to understand data flows and requirements.
Build reusable, scalable data solutions and document processes and data flows.
Partner with analysts, developers, and operational SMEs to translate business needs into technical solutions.
Support datasets and data foundations for advanced analytics and AI/ML initiatives.

Preferred Skills

Python or similar scripting experience.
Experience with machine learning or AI/ML-ready datasets.
Exposure to time-series, sensor, or industrial equipment data.
Understanding of manufacturing KPIs and operational metrics.
Experience with modern data orchestration and integration tools.

Knowledge & Expertise

Experience in data engineering, analytics engineering, software development, or a related technical field.
Strong SQL skills, including complex queries, joins, transformations, and data manipulation.
Knowledge of ETL/ELT, data pipelines, data integration, and data modeling.
Understanding of data quality, validation, governance, and lineage.
Ability to work through ambiguous or messy data and independently troubleshoot problems.
Strong ownership of data quality and downstream usability.
Ability to learn new systems and technologies and engage SMEs when needed.
Strong communication and collaboration skills.

Location: Selected candidate must be based or near one of the offices in Sioux Falls, SD, Sioux Center, IA or Cincinnati, OH. The candidate will have the ability to be hybrid near one of the listed offices.

**Travel:**The amount of travel will vary according to business requirements (may be up to 10%). This is an in person role and the selected candidate must be in one of the listed locations.
