Put Your Maintenance Skills to Work in a Place Where It Matters
Are you a hands-on maintenance professional who enjoys solving problems, working with different building systems, and taking pride in keeping facilities operating at their best? Are you looking for an opportunity to apply your skills in a team-oriented environment with a consistent overnight schedule?
Drew University is seeking a dependable General Maintenance Technician to join our Facilities team on our beautiful campus in Madison, New Jersey.
This is an opportunity to put your general maintenance and repair skills to work across a variety of campus buildings and systems. Rather than traveling from customer to customer, you'll work in one campus environment, becoming familiar with its facilities and playing an important role in their ongoing operation.
From routine preventive maintenance and building repairs to responding to unexpected maintenance needs, your work will help keep the classrooms, offices, residence halls, and other spaces where our students, faculty, and staff learn, work, and live safe and well maintained.
What You'll Do
As a General Maintenance Technician, you'll take a hands-on role in maintaining campus buildings, addressing everyday maintenance needs, and responding to building system issues during overnight hours.
Perform General Building Maintenance and Repairs
- Perform routine and corrective maintenance on buildings, equipment, fixtures, and building components, including minor carpentry, plumbing, electrical, and general repairs.
- Address common maintenance issues such as repairing doors, locks, windows, flooring, and fixtures; completing drywall repairs and painting; and replacing ceiling tiles, lighting, and other building materials.
Maintain Building Systems and Equipment
- Assist with maintaining mechanical, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, life safety, and other building systems through inspections, preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and routine repairs.
- Identify equipment issues, determine appropriate corrective action, and recognize when specialized repairs or additional support are needed.
Support Overnight Campus Operations
- Conduct building rounds, identify maintenance and safety concerns, and respond to overnight calls involving issues such as water leaks, power interruptions, and HVAC problems.
- Document completed work and outstanding issues, maintain tools and supplies, and collaborate with Facilities team members to support campus operations.
What We're Looking For
We're looking for a reliable, resourceful maintenance professional who takes pride in quality workmanship, enjoys working with their hands, and can confidently address a variety of building maintenance needs.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED; three to five years of general maintenance, building maintenance, or related trades experience preferred.
- Valid U.S. driver's license and ability to operate automobiles, vans, light trucks, and utility vehicles.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to communicate effectively in writing and verbally in English.
Core Technical Skills
- Working knowledge of common building systems, including plumbing, electrical, carpentry, and HVAC, with the ability to troubleshoot and complete routine repairs.
- Familiarity with hand tools, power tools, maintenance equipment, and established workplace safety practices.
- Basic computer skills, including the ability to use email and enter or update work orders.
- Ability to work independently, prioritize assignments, and perform the physical requirements of the position.
Your Schedule
This is a full-time, 40-hour-per-week, campus-based position working overnight hours. Two regular schedule options are available:
- Option 1: Five 8-hour shifts per week - Wednesday through Sunday.
- Option 2: Four 10-hour shifts per week - Thursday through Sunday.
Both schedules include overnight coverage to support the ongoing operation and maintenance of the University's buildings and facilities.
Why Join Drew University?
At Drew, you'll have the opportunity to use your maintenance skills in an environment that offers something different from a traditional maintenance position.
- One primary work location: Spend your workdays on our scenic Madison campus rather than traveling between multiple customer sites.
