Brief Description of the Police Cadet Job: Under immediate supervision, this entry-level position receives academic training in the fundamentals of law enforcement. They are assigned to various department operations until entry into the law enforcement academy (Police Academy). Entire responsibility of individual in this job category is to successfully complete the law enforcement academy in order to become a certified Police Officer.
Education and Experience Requirements for Police Cadet:
High School diploma or equivalent. Must be 21 years of age at the time of the completion of the academy.
Essential Functions for Police Cadet:
- A Police Cadet establishes and maintains contact with both Police Department staff and other law enforcement personnel.
- Will report to the Training Coordinator when not effectively involved in Police Academy training. Professionally represents the Decatur, TX Police Department as a student of a respective Police Academy.
- Attends pre-Academy and Police Academy training activities and receives and demonstrates understanding of classroom and field instruction in report writing, geographical comprehension, and department policies.
- Attends a respective Police Academy regularly and arrives on time. Maintains passing scores as set by the respective Police Academy in all subjects of instruction while attending the Police Academy.
- Meets or exceeds minimum physical fitness curriculum before and while attending the respective Police Academy. Reports deficiency or difficulties in meeting minimum set standards of the Police Academy to the Training Unit in a timely manner.
- Performs duties according to the City and departmental safety rules and policies. Performs all other job-related duties as assigned or as become apparent. Ability to get along with other employees and the public.
- Regular attendance is required.
FLSA: 7K exempt Hours: Full-time, Shift Salary Range: $52,000

Qualifications
Education and Experience Requirements for Police Officer:
High school diploma or equivalency. Peace Officer license required. Valid Texas Operator Driver’s License required. TLETS certification preferred.
Education and Experience Requirements for Police Cadet:
High School diploma or equivalent. Must be 21 years of age at the time of the completion of the academy.
