Project Summary
The Cloud Migration Engineer II is a senior hands-on engineer who owns moderate-to-high complexity and multi-tier application migrations from on-premises data centers to Microsoft Azure and Amazon Web Services (AWS). The role independently assesses technical readiness, selects and adapts approved migration patterns, coordinates technical execution, resolves cross-domain issues, and ensures that migration, validation, rollback, and stabilization activities are completed safely and consistently. The role remains hands-on and is not a people-manager or architect position. The role is remote.
Key Responsibilities
- Owns moderate-to-high complexity or multi-tier application migrations from technical assessment through cutover, rollback, stabilization, and handoff.
- Analyzes incomplete application and infrastructure information, validates complex dependencies and readiness risks, and recommends remediation before migration.
- Selects and adapts approved Azure and AWS migration patterns and runbooks within program guardrails to address application-specific requirements.
- Reviews target-environment configuration and resolves design or integration issues involving compute, Windows and Linux operating systems, networking, storage, virtualization, identity, security, and application services.
- Coordinates technical migration execution, including replication, synchronization, shutdown and startup sequencing, decision points, specialist engagement, escalation, cutover, and rollback activities.
- Leads diagnosis and resolution of cross-domain migration issues and determines when an architect or shared engineering specialist must be engaged.
- Reviews migration readiness, runbooks, automation, validation results, technical evidence, and rollback viability before key migration decisions.
- Develops or improves reusable PowerShell, Bash, Python, infrastructure-as-code, and migration automation assets using approved GitHub repositories and program standards.
- Authors or approves runbooks and technical procedures for complex migration patterns and identifies systemic improvements to migration-factory methods, automation, guardrails, and controls.
- Guides Cloud Migration Engineer I staff, reviews technical work, and serves as a technical escalation point without acting as a people manager.
Required For This Opportunity
- US Citizen
- Minimum five years of progressively responsible infrastructure engineering, systems administration, cloud engineering, or migration experience, including independently leading complex server or application migrations
- Demonstrated ability to assess technical readiness, analyze incomplete dependency information, select among approved migration approaches, and adapt runbooks for application-specific requirements
- Hands-on experience with Azure and/or AWS cloud environments, including target configuration, migration tooling, validation, troubleshooting, and operational handoff
- Advanced troubleshooting experience across Windows Server, Linux, networking, storage, virtualization, identity and access management, security controls, and application dependencies
- Experience installing, upgrading, configuring, and troubleshooting Windows Server and Linux environments, including Red Hat, Oracle Linux, CentOS, or similar distributions
- Experience managing Windows and Linux file systems, including PowerShell-based Windows administration and Linux Logical Volume Manager (LVM) and ZFS
- Experience supporting migrations with Azure File Sync, AWS DataSync, rsync, robocopy, Azure Files, NFS, and/or Amazon Elastic File System (EFS)
- Experience establishing performance baselines, diagnosing performance issues, and recommending cloud target sizing based on existing-system data
- Ability to develop or improve PowerShell, Bash, Python, infrastructure-as-code, or similar automation supporting deployment, configuration, migration, rollback, and validation
- Experience reviewing another engineer’s runbooks, automation, validation evidence, or migration artifacts and providing technical guidance
- Experience applying or validating STIG controls and/or DoD security requirements within secure and compliant engineering procedures
Nice to Have Skills
- Experience with Azure Government or AWS GovCloud environments
- Current associate-level cloud certification strongly preferred, such as Microsoft Certified: Azure Administrator Associate, AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Associate, or AWS Certified SysOps Administrator – Associate
- Advanced or complementary certification such as Microsoft Certified: Azure Solutions Architect Expert, Microsoft Certified: DevOps Engineer Expert, AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Professional, AWS Certified DevOps Engineer – Professional, HashiCorp Certified: Terraform Associate, or a relevant security credential
