Job Title: Electrical Engineer IJob DescriptionThis role focuses on delivering high-quality electrical engineering support for industrial production facilities, with an emphasis on power system studies, control systems, and plant support. The Electrical Engineer I performs detailed analyses such as short circuit, arc flash, and load flow studies, supports plant operations and troubleshooting, and contributes to the design and implementation of plant expansions and turnarounds. The position combines office-based engineering work with on-site support at chemical manufacturing facilities, ensuring safe, reliable, and efficient plant operations.
Responsibilities
- Perform short circuit analysis, arc flash studies, and load flow studies on existing plant electrical systems using ETAP software.
- Review and redline P&IDs, specification sheets, and equipment drawings to ensure accuracy and alignment with plant requirements and standards.
- Provide plant support by troubleshooting signal and electrical problems and implementing effective corrective actions.
- Assist local instrumentation and electrical technicians with design changes, plant additions, and modifications to existing systems.
- Perform sizing calculations for wiring, transformers, cables, feeders, and overload relays to ensure safe and reliable operation.
- Review specification sheets for the instrumentation and electrical portions of larger plant expansion projects.
- Develop capital and expense budgets for plants and projects, supporting planning and decision-making for electrical and control system investments.
- Support distributed control system (DCS) activities, including assisting with loop checks and interlock checks.
- Participate in control system programming when required, particularly for systems such as Siemens PCS-7, OPTO 22, and APACS.
- Assist with plant start-up and turnaround activities by providing sound engineering guidance and judgment to ensure safe and successful startup.
- Contribute to the development and maintenance of procedures, Process Safety Management (PSM) manuals, and training manuals related to electrical and control systems.
- Develop turnaround project schedules and work on site during major outages or turnarounds to support execution of electrical and control system work.
- Collaborate with the controls division team, including DCS programmers and technicians, to coordinate and deliver integrated electrical and control solutions.
Essential Skills
- 35 years of experience as an electrical engineer in an industrial plant production environment such as chemical, oil and gas, pulp and paper, power plant, or mining.
- Proficiency with ETAP software for power studies, including load flow, load calculations, short circuit analysis, and arc flash studies.
- Experience creating, reviewing, and interpreting P&IDs, specification sheets, and equipment drawings.
- Hands-on experience with Siemens distributed control systems (DCS), particularly Siemens PCS-7.
- Experience with APACS systems and related HMI environments.
- Working knowledge of NFPA 70, NFPA 70B, and NFPA 70E standards.
- Ability to troubleshoot signal and electrical problems in an industrial plant environment.
- Ability to perform electrical equipment sizing, including wiring, transformers, cables, feeders, and overload relays.
- Strong understanding of power system studies, including short circuit, arc flash, and load flow analysis.
- Ability to support and participate in plant start-ups, turnarounds, and expansions.
- Effective communication skills for collaborating with technicians, programmers, and plant personnel.
- Strong organizational skills to develop budgets and turnaround project schedules.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience working in chemical manufacturing facilities or similar heavy industrial environments.
- Familiarity with OPTO 22 systems.
- Experience with Siemens DCS distributed control systems with APACS HMI.
- Experience assisting with loop checks and interlock checks in DCS environments.
- Experience contributing to procedures, PSM manuals, and training documentation.
- Ability to provide engineering guidance to support safe and compliant plant operations.
- Comfort working across multiple sites and coordinating with diverse technical teams.
Work EnvironmentThe role is based primarily at a corporate headquarters environment, with approximately 70% of the time spent in the office and 30% traveling to chemical manufacturing facilities. The position operates within a controls-focused division that includes DCS programmers and technicians, fostering close collaboration on distributed control systems and plant automation projects. Work at the headquarters involves computer-based engineering tasks, including ETAP modeling, reviewing drawings, and preparing budgets and documentation. Site visits to chemical manufacturing plants involve working in active industrial environments around process equipment, electrical systems, and control systems, particularly during start-ups, turnarounds, and project implementations. The work schedule may include periods of increased on-site presence during major projects or outages, and the environment emphasizes safety, adherence to NFPA standards, and teamwork with plant operations, maintenance, and technical staff.
