Software Engineer

Help build the systems that keep thousands of stores running. As the company behind Plato's Closet, Play It Again Sports, Once Upon A Child, Music Go Round, and Style Encore, we help entrepreneurs build successful businesses while making resale accessible to communities across North America. Winmark is looking for a Software Engineer to develop, enhance, and support the core retail platform systems that power store operations at scale. This role brings strong backend development fundamentals and contributes to the design and implementation of reliable, maintainable solutions. You would have the opportunity to expand architectural responsibility while delivering practical improvements to systems used every day.

Job Duties

• Develop and enhance core point-of-sale and enterprise systems supporting thousands of retail locations
• Contribute to technical design and implementation of features and services, from development through deployment and support
• Help modernize legacy platform components while maintaining stability for active stores
• Build maintainable backend services, data models, and supporting frontend functionality
• Translate business requirements into clear technical approaches and achievable implementation steps
• Investigate and resolve application and data issues using sound debugging and problem-solving practices
• Apply performance, reliability, and security principles to systems handling transactional workloads
• Write and maintain automated tests to protect critical workflows and support safe releases
• Participate in design discussions and code reviews, incorporating feedback and sharing practical solutions
• Assess tradeoffs and adapt approaches to make progress through evolving requirements, balancing delivery speed, scalability, reliability, and business risk
• Additional responsibilities and projects as assigned.

Requirements

• 4-year degree in Computer Science or Computer Engineering or related field of study.
• 7+ years building and operating production-grade systems.
• Experience contributing to the design and implementation of application components, services, or system architecture
• Ability to diagnose and resolve production issues using logs, metrics, and debugging tools
• Understanding of transactional systems, data integrity, and reliable application behavior
• Experience with relational databases, SQL, data modeling, and API design
• Backend service development using TypeScript, Node.js, Nest.js .NET, or comparable frameworks
• Familiarity with modern frontend development using React or similar frameworks
• Experience writing unit and integration tests, with an understanding of broader automated testing practices

Preferred Qualifications

• Retail or multi-location franchisee systems experience
• Exposure to distributed or offline-first architectures
• Payments, hardware integrations, or third-party APIs
• Supporting legacy systems during modernization.
• AI assisted development helping design, build, and test projects.

Location: Plymouth, Minnesota | Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Pay range: $124,000–$179,000 per year Position status: Exempt
