Labor Service

The City of Waltham is currently looking for candidates to register on our civil service lists for positions of Laborer, Gardner, Highway Maintenance, Motor Equipment Operator (MEO), Heavy Motor Equipment Operator (HMEO) and Special Motor Equipment Operator (SMEO)*. HMEO & SMEO positions require a valid Commercial Driver’s License. We are looking to build our applicant pool. Base on MGL. Ch. 31 Sect. 28 the names of persons who apply for employment in labor service shall be registered and placed, in the order of the dates on which they file their applications, on the list for the titles for which they apply and qualify. Veterans and surviving spouse or surviving parents of veterans, who were killed in action or died from a service-connected disability, incurred in war service, who have not remarried shall be placed on the eligible list before all other candidates. Registrations are valid for a period of five years. Applicants have a one-time opportunity to renew for an additional five years if they notify the Human Resources Department in writing six months prior to and after the anniversary date of the registration. To be eligible for employment you must:

• Have met the minimum qualifications of the position
• Have a valid Massachusetts Driver’s License or a CDL for HMEO & SMEO positions
• *Have a Hoisting license if applying for Special Motor Equipment Operator
• Complete a City of Waltham application
• Have three written letters of recommendation
• Pass a CORI background check
• Pass a pre-employment physical, lift test and drug test
• Pass an oral interview panel

If eligible, you will be notified of future openings, based on your seniority on the list. Please be sure to read and respond to all notifications sent to you. If you fail to respond to three notifications or if your notification is returned you will be removed from the list. It is your responsibility to update any email or address changes.
