Original job description
Wallace Design Collective has an immediate opening for a Technical Designer to join our team in Tulsa. This new role bridges the gap between hands-on field construction knowledge and technical engineering documentation.
We are looking for a reliable professional with significant background in the contracting, construction, or military engineering world who understands real-world building systems and structural conditions. If you have extensive field-level experience such as working as a construction superintendent, foreman, combat engineer, commercial roofing installer, concrete specialist, or welder and possess strong computer, drawing, and reporting capabilities, this role allows you to translate that hands-on expertise into high-quality technical design and investigative deliverables.
Hourly Rate: $33.00 - $40.00 per hour
Additional benefits include medical plans, dental, vision, employee life insurance, 401(k), Flexible Spending Accounts, paid time off, paid holidays and tuition reimbursement.
Requirements
Requirements for this position are as follows:
Responsibilities
- Technical Production & Drafting: Develop, draw, and lay out construction drawings and technical details based on architectural plans, engineering models, and field observations.
- Detailing & Investigation: Adapt standard details to specific project conditions and develop custom detailing for unique, complex structural or envelope conditions.
- Field Evaluation & Report Writing: Conduct site assessments and construct clear, detailed, and comprehensive technical evaluation reports summarizing findings.
- Interdisciplinary Coordination: Coordinate design details seamlessly with other internal and external disciplines, including architectural, MEP consultants, and contractors.
- Quality & Document Review: Review technical documents, submittals, and drawings using PDF markup software (Bluebeam) to ensure buildability, field accuracy, and design intent.
- Task Ownership & Delivery: Manage time independently, handle multiple tasks concurrently, prioritize deadlines, and accept increasing levels of technical responsibility across projects.
Qualifications
- Experience: Around 5 to 10 years of experience in contracting, construction, forensics, or the engineering field.
- Industry Background: Practical field background as a construction superintendent, foreman, mason, commercial roof installer, welder, concrete specialist, BIM technician, or military combat engineer/veteran is highly valued.
- Education: Open to any degree; formal education paired with substantial real-world field experience will be considered.
- Technical & Computer Skills: Proficiency in basic computer operations, technical report writing, and drawing/drafting capabilities. Previous structural drafting experience in AutoCAD or Revit is preferred.
- Software Tools: Working knowledge of or proficiency in Bluebeam Revu and Microsoft Excel is preferred.
- Certifications (Preferred / Highly Regarded): Possession of one or more industry credentials, such as Registered Roof Observer (RRO), Certified Welding Inspector (CWI), Registered Roof Consultant (RRC), ICC certifications, or AWS certifications.
- Communication & Collaboration: Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey technical findings clearly and build positive working relationships with team members and clients.
- Travel Flexibility: Willingness to travel Monday through Friday as needed for site visits, project reviews, or field investigations.
