Original job description
OPERATIONS, COMPUTE
At Wafer, we are building AI systems that automatically optimize inference workloads across silicon. Wafer is well funded and serves trillions of tokens a month for mission-critical workloads at fast-growing AI startups.
We run inference on a fleet of GPUs across multiple providers and hardware vendors, and the fleet grows every month. How well we buy and run that capacity decides our margins and how fast we can say yes to customers.
We're looking for someone to own compute operations: sourcing, contracting and managing GPU capacity so engineering always has the right hardware in the right place at the right price.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
- Source and negotiate GPU capacity across neoclouds, clouds and data centers: pricing, terms, delivery dates and SLAs.
- Keep an accurate picture of the fleet: what we have, where it is, what it costs, when contracts end and how well it is utilized.
- Forecast capacity with engineering and sales so new customers and new model launches never wait on hardware.
- Manage provider relationships day to day: onboarding new capacity, escalating incidents and holding providers to their commitments.
- Work with finance on compute economics: contract structure, commitments, hedging and cost per GPU-hour.
- Build the systems and processes that keep all of this fast and reliable as the fleet grows.
WHAT WE LOOK FOR
- You have bought or operated compute at a neocloud, cloud provider, AI lab, data center operator or a startup with significant GPU spend.
- You understand the hardware: GPU generations across NVIDIA and AMD, interconnect, nodes and clusters, and why they matter for inference.
- You are a strong negotiator with good commercial judgment. You know what a good contract looks like and how its terms affect cost and risk.
- You are highly organized and quantitative. You can keep track of a large, changing fleet and model the tradeoffs.
- You move fast and follow through. Capacity decisions often happen in days, not quarters.
- You work without a spec. You can turn a capacity goal into a plan and execute it.
HOW WE EVALUATE
We score every candidate on seven values:
- Infinitely Resourceful
- Exceptionalism
- Unreasonable Standards
- Company Over Self
- High EQ
- Learns Quickly
- First Principles Thinker
BENEFITS
- Fully covered medical, dental, and vision insurance.
- Daily lunch and dinner, unlimited PTO, and parental leave.
- $1K/month housing stipend (post-tax) if you live within walking distance (0.5 miles) from the office.
- Relocation allowance and benefits.
- Covered Uber/Waymo from/to office.
- Visa sponsorship available.
HOW WE WORK
On-site in San Francisco, five days a week. Small team with massive surface area and ownership. You operate with complete autonomy of how to solve problems.
You will build compute operations while doing the work yourself. Your success is measured by whether Wafer has the capacity it needs, when it needs it, at a price that works.Source, contract and manage the GPU capacity behind Wafer's inference cloud. Full-time, on-site in San Francisco.
