Original job description

Step into a high-impact engineering role where your mechanical design expertise directly shapes robust, reliable products for demanding applications. Youll join a technically driven team that values precision, sound engineering judgment, and the ability to translate complex requirements into manufacturable, compliant solutions.

About the Role:

As a Contract Mechanical Engineer, you will be responsible for end-to-end mechanical system design, from concept through to production-ready documentation. You will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams to ensure designs meet performance, safety, and regulatory requirements while remaining cost-effective and manufacturable. Your work will be critical in driving timely project delivery and maintaining the organisations reputation for technical excellence.

Key Responsibilities:

Develop detailed 3D models and engineering drawings in SolidWorks and related CAD tools for mechanical components and assemblies.
Perform mechanical system design, including sizing, selection, and integration of components to meet functional, performance, and reliability targets.
Apply materials selection and metallurgy principles to optimise strength, durability, weight, and cost for specific operating environments.
Conduct thermodynamics and heat transfer analyses to manage thermal loads, cooling strategies, and temperature-dependent performance.
Design for manufacturability (DFM), translating concepts into designs suitable for machining, casting, forming, and other manufacturing processes.
Create and maintain complete engineering documentation, including BOMs, specifications, and tolerance analyses to support production.
Collaborate with manufacturing, quality, and supply chain teams to resolve design issues and support prototype builds and design validation.
Ensure all designs comply with relevant regulatory, industry, and safety standards throughout the development lifecycle.

Key Requirements:

Proven experience in mechanical engineering with a focus on mechanical system design for industrial or product-based applications.
Advanced proficiency in SolidWorks and CAD for 3D modelling, assemblies, and detailed drawing creation.
Strong background in materials selection and metallurgy, including understanding of material properties, treatments, and failure modes.
Hands-on experience with manufacturing processes such as machining, casting, forming, and assembly methods.
Demonstrated capability in DFM, including designing parts and assemblies that are efficient and cost-effective to manufacture.
Working knowledge of thermodynamics and heat transfer, including practical application to real-world mechanical systems.
Familiarity with regulatory and safety standards relevant to mechanical design and product development, with a track record of compliant designs.
Ability to operate effectively in a contract environment, managing priorities, deadlines, and deliverables with minimal supervision.

Desirable Skills:

Experience with finite element analysis (FEA) or other simulation tools for stress, vibration, or thermal analysis.
Background in reliability engineering, failure analysis, or root cause investigation.
Exposure to lean manufacturing or continuous improvement methodologies as they relate to design.
Experience working within ISO or other formal quality management systems.
Strong documentation and configuration management practices using PDM/PLM tools.

Qualifications:

Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering or closely related discipline.
Professional Engineer (PE) licensure in Mechanical Engineering preferred but not required.
Additional certifications or formal training in SolidWorks, CAD, or advanced mechanical design considered an advantage.
Ongoing professional development in materials, manufacturing, or thermal analysis viewed favourably.

If you are a mechanically minded problem-solver who thrives on delivering precise, manufacturable designs, this contract role offers an excellent opportunity to make a tangible impactapply now to be considered.
