Summary of Responsibilities
- Oversee the hiring, onboarding, scheduling, and day-to-day supervision of Computer Science Department student employees. Complete and maintain required employment paperwork, including ePAFs, IVAFs, WESIAs, and applicable international student agreements. Coordinate student employee assignments with faculty and course needs, verify that employees are qualified and cleared to assist with assigned courses, and maintain lab and course coverage throughout the semester. Handle employee reassignment or replacement as needed; review timekeeping and payroll records for accuracy and address discrepancies; and address performance concerns and disciplinary issues at the department level.
- Manage the student employee program from an instructional and operational standpoint. Train employees on effective tutoring and pedagogy, appropriate limits on student assistance, and departmental expectations for working with students. Ensure employees understand and follow FERPA requirements when handling student information. Train employees who assist with undergraduate grading on fair and consistent grading practices, appropriate handling of student work, and the limits of their responsibilities under university academic integrity standards and faculty direction.
- Oversee the lab and office environment to maintain an organized, safe, and inclusive space that supports students seeking assistance or learning opportunities in computer science. Serve as a point of contact for student employees who have questions, encounter assignment-related problems, or experience difficulties working with other employees, faculty, or the department. Provide additional support or help determine appropriate next steps when employees cannot resolve technical or instructional problems independently.
- Maintain the student employee program’s documentation, training materials, procedures, and reference information, and update processes as needs change. When necessary, delegate portions of the work to experienced student employees while retaining responsibility for the program's overall operation. Provide additional departmental support as needed, including creating posters, attending events and functions, grading occasional classes, and picking up and delivering items.
