About Upstart

At Upstart, we’re united by a mission that matters: to radically reduce the cost and complexity of borrowing for all Americans. Every day, we bring creativity, experimentation, and advanced AI to reshape access to credit, helping millions move forward financially with clarity and confidence.

As the leading AI lending marketplace, we partner with banks and credit unions to expand access to affordable credit through technology that’s both radically intelligent and deeply human. Our platform runs over one million predictions per borrower using more than 3,000 signals, powering smarter, fairer decisions for millions of customers. But the numbers only hint at the impact. Every idea, every voice, and every contribution moves us closer to a world where credit never stands between people and their financial progress.

We’re proudly digital-first, giving most Upstarters the flexibility to do their best work from wherever they thrive, alongside teammates across 80+ cities in the US and Canada. Digital-first doesn’t mean distant. We’re intentional about in-person connection through team onsites, planning sessions, and moments that spark creativity and trust. And whether you choose to work primarily from home or collaborate in-person from one of our offices in Columbus, Austin, the Bay Area, or New York City, you’ll have the support to work in the way that works best for you.

If you’re energized by tackling meaningful problems, excited to innovate with purpose, and motivated by work that truly matters, we’d love to hear from you.

The Team:

Upstart’s Product Quality Oversight team builds and operates the first line of defense quality oversight program for unsecured lending, including personal loans, small-dollar loans, and cash line. The team assesses whether lending decisions, disclosures, customer-facing workflows, and servicing outputs operate as intended and meet regulatory and internal policy requirements.

As the Product Quality Associate Manager, Unsecured Lending at Upstart, you will execute risk-based quality testing across the lending lifecycle and help strengthen controls as the program expands. You’ll document reliable testing evidence, investigate exceptions, and support the shift from manual checks to validated automated monitoring. This is an individual contributor role.

How you’ll make an impact

  • Execute manual and automated quality tests for assigned regulatory areas, following established test scripts and sampling approaches, evaluating disclosures, lending decisions, and customer-facing workflows against regulatory requirements and internal policies.
  • Build and validate testing populations and samples, document test steps and evidence, and maintain workpapers that another reviewer can reperform.
  • Take part in design walkthroughs for assigned tests, asking whether each control would actually catch the error being tested, and raise design concerns to the Product Quality Manager.
  • Analyze testing exceptions to distinguish isolated errors from potential systemic gaps; classify exceptions using the program's severity ratings, document root causes, escalate findings, and support follow-up validation.
  • Recognize when a requirement or result isn’t clear-cut, document the question, and escalate for Compliance or Legal interpretation rather than forcing a conclusion.
  • Reperform automated monitoring checks and validate results after system or process changes, including reviewing whether monitoring missed relevant exceptions.
  • Partner with Product, Engineering, Operations, Compliance, Legal, and Risk to communicate findings and identify improvements to processes and controls.
  • Use approved AI tools to support testing research or draft test steps, verifying outputs against source requirements and protecting customer information.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent practical experience.
  • 3+ years of experience in compliance testing, quality control or assurance, internal audit, or regulatory examination in consumer lending.
  • Experience performing transaction-level testing under consumer financial regulations, such as TILA/Reg Z, ECOA/Reg B, FCRA, EFTA/Reg E, FDCPA/Reg F, or UDAAP.
  • Experience querying or analyzing data with spreadsheet tools or comparable methods to build or validate testing populations.
  • Experience documenting test procedures, supporting evidence, exceptions, and testing conclusions.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of automated lending platforms, credit decisioning systems, or digital lending products.
  • Experience with unsecured installment loans or lines of credit.
  • Experience using AI tools in quality testing and checking the accuracy of AI-generated results.
  • Ability to coordinate multiple testing cycles and deadlines as program priorities change.
  • Ability to present findings and proposed control improvements clearly to cross-functional partners.
