For those who want to invent the future of health care, here's your opportunity. We're going beyond basic care to health programs integrated across the entire continuum of care. Join us in making healthcare work better for everyone through people-led, responsible AI while Caring. Connecting. Growing together.
Optum is a global organization that delivers care, aided by technology, to help millions of people live healthier lives. The work you do with our team will directly improve health outcomes by connecting people with the care, pharmacy benefits, data and resources they need. You will work with talented peers, have opportunities to develop your career, and help deliver technology that supports the communities we serve.
Our Cloud Platform Engineering team builds reusable software and platform capabilities that enable secure cloud infrastructure across Microsoft Azure and Amazon Web Services. This is a software engineering role focused on cloud platforms, not a traditional systems-administration role. We treat Infrastructure as Code as a software engineering discipline, using sophisticated Terraform composition, reusable frameworks, internal libraries, testing, dependency management and automation to manage thousands of cloud resources. You will enhance established platform patterns, contribute production software, and use modern AI-assisted engineering practices while developing broader cloud expertise.
You'll enjoy the flexibility to work remotely * from anywhere within the U.S. as you take on some tough challenges.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Develop, test and enhance reusable Terraform modules, existing platform framework components, internal libraries and supporting software written in Java, C# or TypeScript
- Implement cloud platform capabilities within established architecture using Terraform, GitLab CI/CD, GitOps and cloud-native automation patterns where appropriate
- Apply strong software engineering fundamentals including data structures, algorithms, computational complexity, dependency-graph reasoning, interface design, automated testing and maintainable abstraction design
- Contribute to code and design reviews and improve the reliability, security, observability, testability and maintainability of shared platform components
- Build and maintain GitLab pipelines for testing, validation, policy enforcement, packaging and safe infrastructure delivery
- Participate in the team's weekly on-call rotation, support incident response and service restoration, and convert operational learnings into tests, automation, documentation or platform improvements
- Participate effectively in Scrum, Kanban or a hybrid Agile model, including backlog refinement, planning, reviews and retrospectives, while maintaining clear work items, acceptance criteria and technical documentation
- Use approved AI-assisted development capabilities to improve coding, testing, troubleshooting, documentation and operational workflows, and show practical interest in emerging agentic workflows
You'll be rewarded and recognized for your performance in an environment that will challenge you and give you clear direction on what it takes to succeed in your role as well as provide development for other roles you may be interested in.
Required Qualifications:
- 2+ years of software engineering, platform engineering, cloud engineering or equivalent practical experience
- Experience working in an Agile delivery model with disciplined backlog refinement, acceptance criteria and technical documentation
- Production software-development experience in Java, C#, TypeScript, or another comparable general-purpose programming language, including testing and debugging
- Practical Terraform experience including reusable modules, composition, iteration and dynamic constructs, state and remote backends, automated testing and CI/CD integration
- Demonstrate deep expertise in at least three of the following cloud infrastructure domains in either Azure or AWS: networking, DNS, identity and access management (IAM), certificates/PKI, private and hybrid connectivity, and Kubernetes. Equivalent depth in both cloud providers is not required
- Demonstrate ability to reason about data structures, graph relationships, algorithms, computational complexity and reusable software abstractions
- Demonstrate ability to participate in a weekly on-call rotation and support incident response for the platform capabilities the team owns
- United States citizenship
Preferred Qualifications:
- Relevant Azure or AWS certification strongly preferred; associate-level credentials are appropriate, and demonstrated practical expertise is more important than certification alone. Foundational certifications alone do not establish the required depth
- Experience in one or more of the following areas is valuable. Candidates are not expected to have experience with every technology or domain listed
- Large or deeply composed Terraform codebases, multi-cloud abstractions, code generation, internal SDKs, testing frameworks or custom policy frameworks
- GitLab CI/CD, Argo CD, CDK8s, AKS, EKS or other Kubernetes and GitOps technologies
- Deep specialization in one or more of the listed cloud infrastructure domains
- Practical AI-assisted development and exposure to MCP, agentic workflows, RAG or comparable AI engineering patterns
