Original job description

Explore opportunities with Logistics Health Incorporated (LHI), part of the Optum family of business. We’re dedicated to simplifying the logistics of complex workforce health programs with cost-effective solutions and a seamless distribution process. With offices in La Crosse, Wis., a satellite office in Chicago and remote employees throughout the country, we have a variety of rewarding career opportunities for you. Elevate your career as you help us create a healthier tomorrow for everyone and discover the meaning behind Caring. Connecting. Growing together.

Optum is a global organization that delivers care, aided by technology, to help millions of people live healthier lives. The work you do with our team will directly improve health outcomes by connecting people with the care, pharmacy benefits, data and resources they need. You will work with talented peers, have opportunities to develop your career, and help deliver technology that supports the communities we serve.

Our Cloud Platform Engineering team builds reusable software and platform capabilities that enable secure infrastructure across Microsoft Azure and Amazon Web Services. This senior software engineering role combines advanced Infrastructure as Code development, domain-level cloud architecture, operational ownership and technical mentoring. Our platform uses sophisticated Terraform composition, reusable multi-cloud abstractions, internal SDKs and libraries, code generation, automated testing and policy controls to manage thousands of cloud resources. You will own shared modules and frameworks, lead technical delivery, mentor engineers and apply AI-assisted and agentic engineering practices to improve platform delivery and operations.

You’ll enjoy the flexibility to work remotely * from anywhere within the U.S. as you take on some tough challenges.

For all hires in the Minneapolis or Washington, D.C. area, you will be required to work in the office a minimum of four days per week.

Primary Responsibilities:

Design, own and evolve major Terraform modules, composition patterns, shared abstractions, internal SDKs, code-generation capabilities, test frameworks and policy controls
Lead detailed architecture and design within an assigned platform domain, translating product and operational needs into secure, scalable and supportable solutions
Develop platform components in Java, C# or TypeScript and integrate them with Terraform, cloud APIs, GitOps workflows and cloud-native automation patterns where appropriate
Apply advanced software engineering practices to complex frameworks, dependency graphs, APIs, reusable abstractions, testing strategies and system design
Lead code and design reviews for complex changes, identifying issues in abstraction boundaries, security, testability, performance, compatibility and lifecycle maintainability
Create and improve GitLab CI/CD pipelines, automated validation, policy gates, release controls and deployment practices for shared platform components
Mentor engineers through design discussions, pairing, code reviews and incident learning, and lead medium-sized technical initiatives from discovery through operational stabilization
Participate in the team’s weekly on-call rotation; lead or coordinate significant incidents, root-cause analysis and corrective actions, converting recurring failures into durable platform improvements
Improve Agile delivery through solider refinement, story readiness, dependency visibility, acceptance criteria, technical documentation and operational-readiness practices
Design and implement practical AI-assisted and agentic workflows, including MCP-based integrations where appropriate, to improve engineering productivity, testing, troubleshooting, platform operations or developer experience

You’ll be rewarded and recognized for your performance in an environment that will challenge you and give you clear direction on what it takes to succeed in your role as well as provide development for other roles you may be interested in.

Required Qualifications:

5+ years of software engineering, platform engineering, cloud engineering or equivalent practical experience
Solid production development experience in Java, C#, TypeScript, or another comparable general-purpose programming language, including design, automated testing, debugging, algorithmic reasoning and code-review leadership
Advanced Terraform experience with reusable module architecture, composition, complex iteration and dynamic patterns, state strategies, testing, policy controls and CI/CD delivery
Experience mentoring individual engineers and leading technical delivery across multiple contributors
Experience improving Agile refinement, story quality, technical documentation, operational readiness and delivery flow
Demonstrate deep expertise in at least three to four of the following cloud infrastructure domains in either Azure or AWS: networking, DNS, identity and access management (IAM), certificates/PKI, private and hybrid connectivity, and Kubernetes Equivalent depth in both cloud providers is not required
Proven ability to design maintainable abstractions, reason about complex dependency graphs and evolve shared frameworks without destabilizing consumers
Proven ability to participate in weekly on-call rotations, coordinate significant incident response and lead root-cause and corrective-action work
United States citizenship

Preferred Qualifications:

Relevant Azure or AWS certification; associate, professional or specialty credentials are appropriate, and demonstrated practical expertise is more important than certification alone
Experience in one or more of the following areas is valuable Candidates are not expected to have experience with every technology or domain listed
Experience with multi-cloud platform frameworks managing hundreds or thousands of resources, including internal libraries, code generation or custom policy frameworks
Experience with GitLab CI/CD, Argo CD, CDK8s, AKS, EKS, Kubernetes networking, ingress, service mesh or other Kubernetes and GitOps technologies
Experience building MCP tools, agentic workflows or solutions using Azure AI Foundry, AWS Bedrock AgentCore, LangGraph/LangChain, RAG, knowledge systems or comparable AI engineering patterns
Experience leading incident reviews and converting recurring failure modes into durable improvements in platform design, observability, testing, policy or automation
Deep specialization in one or more of the listed cloud infrastructure domains

*All employees working remotely will be required to adhere to UnitedHealth Group’s Telecommuter Policy

Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, we offer benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements).
