Original job description

Optum is a global organization that delivers care, aided by technology to help millions of people live healthier lives. The work you do with our team will directly improve health outcomes by connecting people with the care, pharmacy benefits, data and resources they need to feel their best. Here, you will find a culture guided by inclusion, talented peers, comprehensive benefits and career development opportunities. Come make an impact on the communities we serve as you help us advance health optimization on a global scale. Join us to start Caring. Connecting. Growing together. As a Senior Software Engineer on the OCPN Cloud Platform Team, you will drive the architecture, technical design, development, delivery, and operationalization of cloud-native, resilient, and secure infrastructure across Azure, AWS, and GCP. You will lead cutting-edge initiatives focused on cloud governance, networking, security, and automation while designing scalable backend services and Infrastructure as Code (IaC) frameworks.

In this role, you will champion modern software engineering principles, robust DevSecOps practices, and AI-powered automation to streamline workflows, strengthen security and compliance, and deliver high-impact cloud capabilities across the enterprise. You will also promote engineering excellence and best practices, including the responsible use of AI-assisted engineering tools.

You'll enjoy the flexibility to work remotely from anywhere within the U.S. as you take on challenging and rewarding work. For employees located in the Minneapolis or Washington, D.C. areas, a minimum of four days per week in the office are required.

Primary Responsibilities:

Design, architect, and implement multi-cloud infrastructure, networking, and governance frameworks across AWS, Azure, and GCP
Develop and maintain scalable Infrastructure as Code (IaC) templates using Terraform to automate cloud resource provisioning and configuration management
Build enterprise-grade backend microservices and automation tools using Java, Go, or Python
Collaborate with enterprise security and compliance teams to integrate cloud guardrails, policy enforcement, and automated security controls into cloud platforms
Lead the adoption of DevSecOps practices by integrating security scanning, vulnerability management, secrets management, policy enforcement, and compliance validation throughout the software development lifecycle
Establish and mature DevOps practices and CI/CD pipelines to support automated, secure, and reliable software delivery
Design, develop, and deploy AI-powered solutions and automation capabilities to address complex engineering and operational challenges, with an emphasis on responsible AI use
Use enterprise-approved AI tools to streamline software development workflows, automate repetitive tasks, and drive continuous platform improvement
Evaluate emerging cloud and AI technology trends to inform solution design, technical roadmap development, and strategic innovation
Mentor and guide engineers through technical design reviews, code reviews, architecture discussions, and the adoption of cloud engineering best practices

You'll be rewarded and recognized for your performance in an environment that will challenge you, provide clear directions on what it takes to succeed in your role, and support your development for other roles you may be interested in.

Required Qualifications:

5+ years of professional experience in software engineering, cloud engineering, or a related field
3+ years of hands-on programming experience with Java, Go, or Python
3+ years of experience architecting, building, and deploying solutions on public cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or GCP
3+ years of experience authoring and managing Infrastructure as Code (IaC) using Terraform
2+ years of experience designing and automating CI/CD pipelines and DevOps workflows
Demonstrated experience integrating security, compliance, and governance tools into cloud architectures at scale

Preferred Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience
Demonstrated experience operating in multi-cloud environments with hands-on expertise across AWS, Azure, and GCP
Experience using modern AI-assisted development tools to accelerate engineering, automation, and testing workflows
Experience with DevSecOps and cloud security tooling, such as GitHub Advanced Security, SonarQube, Prisma Cloud or similar solutions
Professional certifications in public cloud platforms, such as AWS Solutions Architect, Azure Solutions Architect, or GCP Professional Cloud Architect, or the HashiCorp Certified: Terraform Associate certification
Knowledge of containerization and orchestration technologies, including Docker and Kubernetes

At UnitedHealth Group, our mission is to help people live healthier lives and make the health system work better for everyone. We believe everyone-of every race, gender, sexuality, age, location, and income-deserves the opportunity to live their healthiest life. Today, however, there are still far too many barriers to good health which are disproportionately experienced by people of color, historically marginalized groups, and those with lower incomes. We are committed to mitigating our impact on the environment and enabling and delivering equitable care that addresses health disparities and improves health outcomes - an enterprise priority reflected in our mission.

UnitedHealth Group is an Equal Employment Opportunity employer under applicable law and qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, national origin, religion, age, color, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, disability, or protected veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by local, state, or federal laws, rules, or regulations.
