Here, you will find a culture guided by diversity and inclusion, talented peers, comprehensive benefits, and career development opportunities. Come make an impact on the communities we serve as you help us advance health equity on a global scale. Join us to start Caring. Connecting. Growing together. Position Summary As a Senior Software Engineer, you will play a key role in designing, developing, and maintaining high-performing Java/Spring Boot enterprise applications and microservices. Our team is focused on leveraging cutting-edge cloud architectures, robust database solutions, and modern AI-driven automation tools to build high-availability, mission-critical software. In this role, you will work on self-directed, complex technical challenges, collaborate closely with Agile team members, and serve as a technical resource to elevate engineering standards across the organization. You’ll enjoy the flexibility to telecommute* from anywhere within the U.S. as you take on some tough challenges. Primary Responsibilities

Design, develop, deploy, and maintain robust Java/Spring Boot enterprise applications, microservices, and backend integrations
Create and optimize complex SQL queries, stored procedures, and database schemas to ensure data performance and system reliability
Design, develop, and deploy AI-powered solutions to address complex business challenges with an emphasis on responsible use of AI
Leverage enterprise-approved AI tools to streamline software development workflows, automate repetitive tasks, and drive continuous operational efficiency
Create, execute, and maintain unit, integration, and automated test suites to ensure high code quality across all delivery streams
Support CI/CD pipelines, deployment activities, and troubleshoot complex production and non-production issues
Participate actively in Agile ceremonies (Sprint Planning, Daily Standups, Sprint Reviews, Retrospectives) and collaborate with Product Owners to refine backlog items and estimate technical tasks
Serve as a technical resource and mentor to team members, evaluating emerging technical trends to inform solution design and foster best engineering practices

You’ll be rewarded and recognized for your performance in an environment that will challenge you and give you clear direction on what it takes to succeed in your role as well as provide development for other roles you may be interested in.

Required Qualifications

7+ years of professional software engineering experience designing, developing, and supporting enterprise applications using Java, Spring Boot, and REST APIs
5+ years of experience working with SQL Server or relational databases, including database schema design, stored procedures, and query optimization
3+ years of experience building microservices and working with cloud-native technologies and CI/CD pipelines
3+ years of experience working within an Agile/Scrum delivery team, estimating technical tasks, and delivering committed sprint work
1+ years of experience utilizing AI-assisted tools or automated solution platforms to streamline software engineering workflows

Preferred Qualifications

Undergraduate or advanced degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related technical field
Bachelor’s degree or 4+ years of equivalent software engineering experience in lieu of a degree
Experience leading technical design discussions, mentoring engineers, and implementing secure coding standards
Deep knowledge of microservices architecture patterns, performance tuning, and enterprise integration patterns
Proven background in supporting highly available, mission-critical production systems

At UnitedHealth Group, our mission is to help people live healthier lives and make the health system work better for everyone. We believe everyone–of every race, gender, sexuality, age, location, and income–deserves the opportunity to live their healthiest life. Today, however, there are still far too many barriers to good health which are disproportionately experienced by people of color, historically marginalized groups, and those with lower incomes. We are committed to mitigating our impact on the environment and enabling and delivering equitable care that addresses health disparities and improves health outcomes - an enterprise priority reflected in our mission.

Diversity creates a healthier atmosphere: UnitedHealth Group is an Equal Employment Opportunity/Affirmative Action employer and all qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, age, national origin, protected veteran status, disability status, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, marital status, genetic information, or any other characteristic protected by law.
