Original job description

Rapidly Growing Life Sciences Technology Company

Ultima Genomics is a rapidly growing company that is developing ground-breaking genomics technologies. Our mission is to continuously drive the scale of genomic information to enable unprecedented advances in biology and improvements in human health. We have developed a foundational new approach to sequencing at scale that overcomes limitations due to the high costs of current technologies. We are well-funded and have raised over $700 million from global top-tier investors and partners who share our vision. Our team brings together unique and diverse expertise across multiple disciplines, from healthcare and life sciences, to engineering, to technology and software and beyond. We are a collaborative group, including successful entrepreneurs, chemists, hardware and software engineers, genomics and biotechnology experts, molecular and computational biologists, software and algorithm experts, and operations and commercial leaders. Join us to develop and commercialize technologies that unleash the power of genomics at scale and empower the future of human health.

We are looking for a highly motivated Senior Electrical Engineer to join our team!

This is an exciting opening for an experienced Senior Electrical Engineer who wants to help make the world a better place through next-generation sequencing technology.

This is a full-time onsite position at our Fremont, CA location.

How You’ll Contribute

Own the electrical architecture and technical execution of complex subsystems within next-generation automated sequencing instruments. Guide electronic designs from concept through production across robotics, precision motion control, high-speed data acquisition, mixed-signal electronics, and test automation, evaluating tradeoffs among performance, reliability, manufacturability, cost, and schedule
Translate system requirements into electrical specifications and define interfaces and acceptance criteria for assigned subsystems. Lead electrical design reviews and risk assessments within your scope, document technical decisions and risk mitigations, and support applicable safety, electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), and regulatory compliance activities
Design custom printed circuit boards (PCBs) and wire harnesses for complex electromechanical systems, including component selection, schematic capture, layout collaboration, and design documentation
Define verification plans and execute experiments to verify hardware and firmware functionality, characterize performance, and evaluate board-level failure modes. Establish acceptance criteria tied to requirements, analyze results, and drive design changes to close verification gaps
Lead prototype testing and document findings and design improvements. Own electrical readiness for new product integration and the transition to volume production, working with manufacturing to resolve design issues, establish test coverage, and close electrical risks before release
Design automated test and measurement systems to identify component-level failures; troubleshoot electrical issues and collaborate with cross-functional teams and vendors to determine root causes and implement corrective actions
Develop build, test, and training documentation; maintain electrical design records, bills of materials, and engineering changes; and manage component obsolescence and alternate-part qualification throughout the product lifecycle
Other job duties as assigned

Qualifications, Skills, Knowledge & Abilities

BS in Electrical Engineering or a related field
5+ years of relevant industry experience
Hands-on experience designing custom PCBs and mixed-signal electronics with embedded microcontrollers. Experience collaborating with firmware engineers on hardware–software integration and with mechanical and other engineering teams on design integration. Strong understanding of signal and power integrity
Proficiency with electronic design tools such as Altium Designer or KiCad for schematic capture and PCB layout creation and review. Experience using circuit-simulation tools such as SPICE
Experience designing industrial electrical systems, including power-supply sizing, component selection, wire-harness design, and electrical enclosure or panel layout
Knowledge of EMI/EMC mitigation techniques, including grounding, shielding, filtering, and selection of appropriate harness and interconnect components
Strong troubleshooting skills for board-level electronics and complex multidisciplinary systems, with hands-on proficiency using bench and portable measurement equipment
Excellent organizational and communication skills; ability to work independently and collaboratively
Experience with Python for test automation and data analysis, or with designing automated test platforms and reliability test setups, is a strong plus

At Ultima Genomics, your base pay is one part of your total compensation package. This role pays between $135,000 and $155,000 if performed in California, and your actual base pay will depend on your skills, qualifications, experience, and location. Please note that the compensation details listed in US role postings reflect the base salary only, and do not include bonus, equity, or benefits. This role is also eligible for a competitive benefits package that includes: medical, dental, vision, life, and disability insurance; 401(k) retirement plan; flexible spending & health savings account; paid holidays; paid time off; employee assistance program; and other company benefits.
