Position Overview

Take the Lead on Geotechnical Projects with UES! UES is seeking an experienced Geotechnical Engineer to join our growing team in Memphis, Tennessee!

We're looking for a technically strong, self-motivated professional who is ready to take ownership of projects from initial proposal development through investigation, engineering analysis, and final reporting. This is an excellent opportunity for an engineer who enjoys solving complex geotechnical challenges, managing client relationships, and independently driving projects forward.

Our ideal candidate is a licensed Professional Engineer (PE) with a strong background in geotechnical engineering and project management. However, we are also open to considering experienced Engineers-in-Training (EITs) who demonstrate the technical knowledge and independence needed to successfully manage projects.

Responsibilities

What You'll Do Lead Projects from Start to Finish

  • Independently manage geotechnical engineering projects from initial client discussions and proposal development through final deliverables.
  • Develop project scopes, budgets, schedules, and technical proposals.
  • Plan and coordinate subsurface exploration programs, including drilling, sampling, laboratory testing, and field investigations.
  • Manage project budgets, schedules, resources, and deliverables to ensure successful execution.
  • Serve as a primary point of contact for clients, contractors, and internal project teams.

Apply Your Technical Expertise

  • Perform and oversee geotechnical engineering analyses, including foundation design recommendations, settlement evaluations, slope stability, and retaining wall assessments.
  • Evaluate subsurface conditions and develop practical engineering recommendations for commercial, industrial, transportation, and infrastructure projects.
  • Interpret soil and rock data, laboratory testing results, and field investigation findings.
  • Prepare and review geotechnical engineering reports, calculations, technical recommendations, and project documentation.
  • Provide engineering guidance to field personnel, drilling teams, and junior technical staff.
  • Support construction-phase engineering services and address geotechnical issues as they arise.

Drive Quality and Client Success

•

  • Deliver technically sound, accurate, and timely engineering recommendations.
  • Identify project challenges and develop practical, cost-effective solutions.
  • Maintain strong client relationships and support opportunities for repeat business.
  • Collaborate with regional engineering teams and technical leadership.
  • Ensure projects meet applicable engineering standards, safety requirements, and quality expectations.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor in Civil Engineering, Geological Engineering, Geology, or similar is required
  • 3+ years of experience in geotechnical engineering.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred or ability to obtain.
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification is a plus but not required.
  • Proven track record of managing mid-to-large scale engineering projects from inception to completion.
  • Experience in geotechnical site investigations, laboratory testing, engineering design, and construction oversight.
  • Experience developing project scopes, budgets, schedules, and risk assessments for infrastructure, environmental, or construction projects.
  • Familiarity with industry standards and regulations (ASTM, AASHTO, FHWA, ASCE, DOT, OSHA, etc.).
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to make data-driven decisions.
  • Ability to lead project teams, mentor junior engineers, and coordinate multidisciplinary efforts.
  • Proven experience in client communication, stakeholder engagement, and contract negotiations.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills for technical reporting, proposal writing, and presentations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Professional Engineer (PE) license, preferably in Tennessee, or ability to obtain licensure through reciprocity.
  • Approximately 4–7+ years of progressive geotechnical engineering experience, with demonstrated independent project management capabilities.
  • Experience managing geotechnical projects from proposal through completion.
  • Experience with geotechnical engineering software and analytical methods.
  • Background supporting commercial development, transportation, industrial, or infrastructure projects.
  • Experience mentoring junior engineers and coordinating multidisciplinary project teams.

PE licensure is strongly preferred; however, qualified EIT candidates with substantial geotechnical experience and demonstrated project ownership will be considered.

Travel Requirements

  • This position requires occasional travel, approximately 10% to 20% of the time, to support business objectives and client engagements. Travel may be both scheduled and on short notice, depending on project needs. Destinations typically include job sites, field locations, or regional offices, where work may be conducted in outdoor or operational environments. Adherence to all company safety protocols and use of PPE is required during travel and on-site work.
