Original job description
About the role and team The Web Platform team is looking for a senior engineer to join the team responsible for the foundation of all web applications at Uber. We provide a high-performance, secure, and reliable web ecosystem for our users (riders, drivers, eaters, and our internal operations and logistics teams) through developer tools, systems, and frameworks. A big part of that foundation is how our code gets built, tested, and shipped. We own Uber's web monorepo and the CI and build systems that thousands of engineers depend on every day. Our goal is to make every change fast to validate and safe to release, using a modern tech stack. That means incremental and cached builds, reliable and fast CI, reproducible pipelines from commit to production, and tooling that catches problems before they reach users. Our products include Fusion.js, the React framework behind hundreds of internal and external web applications, and Base Web, Uber's React component library. We also own the monorepo build and CI platform that ties them together. As a senior engineer, you'll help make Uber's web engineers productive and its web applications high quality by owning the systems that decide how quickly and reliably code builds, tests, and reaches production.
What you’ll do
- Build developer tooling that makes product engineers more productive and their applications more reliable, performant, and secure.
- Own the build, test, and CI systems for a large web monorepo, making them fast, reliable, and scalable as the codebase and the number of engineers grow.
- Drive fleet-wide change and new framework capabilities, so they land across many teams with minimal disruption.
- Shape the technical direction of our platform through design docs. Use open source where it fits, and contribute improvements back.
- Mentor engineers and collaborate across teams to deliver company-wide projects.
Basic Qualifications
- 5+ years of professional software engineering experience, including 2+ years working on build systems, CI/CD, or developer tooling.
- Strong TypeScript and Node.js experience, including debugging and profiling Node processes and build tooling.
- Working knowledge of the modern JavaScript toolchain (pnpm/Yarn/npm, Vite, Rspack/webpack, esbuild or similar bundlers) and at least one major web framework, ideally React.
- Hands-on experience with a large-scale build system in a monorepo (Bazel, Buck2, Pants, Nx, Turborepo, or similar), including diagnosing slow, flaky, or non-hermetic builds.
- Experience building and running CI/CD pipelines (Buildkite, GitHub Actions, or similar) with reproducible, containerized builds from development through production.
- A track record of leading technical initiatives that affected many engineers or services.
Preferred Qualifications
- 6+ years of professional software engineering experience, including 2+ years working on build systems, CI/CD, or developer tooling.
- Experience writing Bazel rules or extensions, or operating remote caching or remote execution.
- Experience with Docker, Kubernetes, and service-oriented or distributed systems.
- Experience with modern web testing, such as cross-browser, integration, and visual regression testing (e.g., Playwright, Vitest).
- Familiarity with web security fundamentals (CORS, CSP, CSRF, XSS) and software supply chain security (dependency auditing, provenance, lockfile integrity).
- Experience with GraphQL, gRPC, WebSockets, or Server-Sent Events.
- Experience building tooling that supports AI-assisted development workflows.
- Open source contributions or maintainership.
