About Tutor

We believe robots are the biggest lever we have to making the physical world a better, more affordable place. But robots are a rounding error in our society: nearly nine out of ten American factories and warehouses don’t even have a single robot, and robots have yet to make their way into our homes or places of business.

Tutor Intelligence is changing that.

Tutor is a robotics research and deployment company, building generally capable robot hardware and artificial intelligence to enable robots to go where no robots have gone before. Sonny is a semi-humanoid robot with frontier dexterity approaching the human form. Cassie does back-breaking work, moving boxes, pallets, and bulk goods for businesses from family-owned manufacturers to some of the largest brands in the world. Tutor robots are manufactured at scale and operate as a network, combining the whole fleet’s learned experience to train ever more capable robot artificial intelligence.

Founded at MIT and headquartered in Watertown, MA, our team is full stack: we design and manufacture robot hardware, train our own models, work directly with the smallest and largest end-customers, and maintain our fleet across the United States. We’re a team of researchers, engineers, technicians, operators, and sellers who love building things and solving hard problems.

Our mission is grand: robots everywhere, for the common good, raising the standard of living across North America, and then the world.

Why This Role Matters

Every design change is a promise that the next robot will be better. At our pace, a change that lands badly becomes scrap, rework, a stopped line or a robot that fails at a customer site. A change that lands well makes every robot after it better. The difference is the process, and you'll own it.

The Role

You own how engineering changes get from an approved design onto the factory floor: a clean cut-in, updated procedures, trained technicians, the right parts on the shelf, and robots that build right the first time after the change.

This role sits on the Production Engineering team within Operations and reports to the Head of Manufacturing. Production Engineering is the technical bridge between Hardware Engineering, Supply Chain, Production and Customer Success, and you'll work across both of our product lines, Cassie and Sonny. This is an individual contributor role with real authority: if a change isn't ready for the floor, it doesn't go to the floor. What You'll Own

  • ECO implementation, end to end. Take approved ECOs from Hardware Engineering and carry them to completion: effectivity and cut-in planning, MBOM updates in our MES (ION), redlines, and verification on the first builds after cut-in.
  • Change Review Board. Represent Manufacturing at CRB. Assess every change for build impact, cost, inventory, scrap and schedule before it's approved, and push back when it isn't ready.
  • Cut-in planning with Supply Chain and Materials. Decide what to buy, what to stop buying, and how to disposition existing inventory: use as is, rework, return or scrap.
  • Work instructions and error-proofing. Write and maintain clear, visual work instructions. Error-proof the process so the right way is the easy way.
  • Technician training. Train the floor on every change before it hits the line, then confirm it's being built right.
  • Field rework plans. Partner with Field Service to plan and document retrofits for robots already deployed at customer sites.
  • Process improvement. Own process performance on the line (first-pass yield, cycle time, scrap and rework) and drive it with data.
  • DFM feedback. Give Hardware Engineering early, specific feedback so designs arrive ready to build.
  • Systems and tools. Help shape our in-house ECO and PLM tooling that connects Onshape, ION and the factory floor. Use AI tools every day to write procedures, analyze data and move faster.

What Success Looks Like

  • 30 days: You know the Cassie line and our ECO flow cold, and you've carried at least one ECO from CRB approval through verified cut-in.
  • 90 days: Every approved ECO has an owner, an effectivity, a cut-in plan and updated work instructions before it reaches the floor. No change reaches a technician without training.
  • 6 months: Time from ECO approval to verified cut-in is measured and falling. Scrap and rework caused by changes are tracked and trending down. The ECO process is documented well enough that a new engineer can run it in their first week.

What You Bring

  • BS in Mechanical, Manufacturing, Industrial, Mechatronics, Electrical or a related engineering discipline
  • 3+ years as a manufacturing, production or process engineer building electromechanical hardware (robotics, automation, automotive, aerospace, medical devices or similar)
  • Hands-on experience implementing engineering changes on a production line: ECOs/ECNs, effectivity, BOM changes, cut-ins and material disposition
  • A track record of writing work instructions that technicians actually use, and training them on the floor
  • Comfortable in CAD (Onshape, SolidWorks or similar) and reading drawings, GD&T, schematics and wiring diagrams
  • Experience working in an MES, ERP or PLM system (ION, Arena, SAP, Oracle or similar)
  • You do your best work where the systems are still being built, and you help build them

Nice to Have

  • Scaling a new product from prototype to production rate
  • Lean and Six Sigma tools: PFMEA, control plans, poka-yoke, SPC
  • Cable harness or electromechanical assembly experience
  • SQL, Python or scripting to build tools and automate data work
  • Experience at a startup or fast-scaling hardware company

Why Tutor?

Whether you’re designing robots, closing deals, running deployments, or creating the processes that help us scale, your work doesn’t sit on a shelf. It shows up on real production floors, making physical work safer and more affordable.

Our team of 160+ is driven by curiosity and a genuine love of building. Everyone here takes real ownership, learns fast, and holds a high bar while having each other’s backs. If you love hard problems and creating things that didn’t exist before, you’ll fit right in.

Why Join

  • Own the process. You set how change happens in our factory, and the standard you set scales to 1,000+ robots.
  • See your work ship. Your changes are on the floor in days and in every robot that leaves the building.
  • Build the system, not just run it. You'll help shape the ECO and PLM tools our factory runs on.
  • AI is how we work. You'll have the tools and backing to automate the paperwork most manufacturing engineers still do by hand.
  • Scale with us. Join early in our first factory and grow as it does.
