Data Solutions Engineer Reports to Director of Technical Services The Data Solutions Engineer builds the systems that turn operational data into information that people can actually use. This is a hands-on role that covers both pipelines, models, and integrations behind the scenes with the forms, apps, and dashboards that various teams use daily. Working closely with subject matter experts who generate and use the data is a must: engineers, operators, supervisors, and staff. They will provide the meaning and context that the data solutions engineer will translate into well-structured systems. This position requires familiarity with the systems and technology and the willingness to learn from the people doing the work and understand the processes to design and implement a useful product.
Position Responsibilities:
- Design and build data infrastructure. Build and maintain SQL databases and data models. Structure and manage data, including ingestion, transformation, and pipeline orchestration.
- Integrate disparate data sources. Connect data from operational systems, spreadsheets, vendor platforms, sensors, and manual data entry into a coherent, reliable foundation. Own the integration logic, error handling, and reconciliation.
- Build user-facing data entry applications. Create forms and apps (Power Apps, Power Automate, Dataverse, or equivalent) that replace spreadsheet or paper workflows, with validation and structure built in at the point of entry.
- Develop reporting and dashboards. Build and maintain Power BI reports and semantic models that answer real operational questions and iterate on them as those questions change.
- Define data organization and standards. Establish naming conventions, master data definitions, ownership, and structure so that data stays consistent and usable as the environment grows. Document what you build.
- Partner with subject matter experts. Interview process owners, map current-state workflows, propose solutions in plain language, and validate that what you built does what they need before you call it done.
- Support and improve what exists. Troubleshoot pipeline failures and report discrepancies and steadily reduce manual workarounds.
Required Qualifications:
- 3+ years building data solutions in a business or operational setting (title may have been Data Engineer, BI Developer, Power Platform Developer, Analytics Engineer, or similar).
- Strong SQL: complex queries, performance tuning, and relational data modeling from first principles.
- Hands-on experience with Azure data services: Data Lake Storage, Data Factory / Synapse / Microsoft Fabric, Azure SQL, or comparable.
- Demonstrated experience building user-facing applications or forms on a low-code platform, ideally Power Apps with Dataverse.
- Proficiency in Power BI: data modeling, Power Query, DAX, and report design intended for non-technical users.
- Experience integrating multiple systems, including messy or semi-structured sources.
- Ability to explain technical trade-offs to non-technical stakeholders, and to extract requirements from people who have never written a requirement.
- Comfortable operating with limited supervision and setting your own priorities across concurrent requests.
- Demonstrated initiative, sound judgment, and a bias toward field-validated results over theoretical approaches.
- Committed to Turner Mining Group’s values and to advancing safe, efficient, and innovative mining operations across every project we execute.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Microsoft certifications: PL-400 (Power Platform Developer), PL-300 (Power BI Data Analyst), DP-700 (Fabric Data Engineer), or PL-600 (Solution Architect).
- Python or another scripting language for transformation and automation work.
- Version control and deployment practice (Git, CI/CD, environment promotion).
- Experience with Azure DevOps and dbt Core.
- Experience in mining, heavy construction, manufacturing, or another field-operations environment.
- Exposure to data governance, security roles, or row-level access design.
