Original job description

The right candidate is passionate about building and has the ability and agency to drive projects to completion.

You should be excited by the prospect of owning a large part of our engineering system, and continuously looking for more responsibility to take on.

Being a backend engineer at Triumph is both demanding and rewarding, and your scope will cover (but not be limited to):

Building consumer facing features to help Triumph's core business metrics
Work closely with data team to solve difficult data driven problems, such as optimal matchmaking, anti-fraud, etc.
Help drive these complex solution into production
Iterating on engineering processes to allow the growing team to ship fast - eg. experimentation platforms, improving CI/CD

Above all, we hire people for their slope, who are willing to match the pace and energy of the growth curve of the company. While we ask a lot, we regularly double down on our top people.

WHAT YOU'LL WORK ON (ARCADE)

Triumph Arcade is a mobile platform where players compete in skill-based games for cash and prizes: async tournaments, real-time 1v1 matches, streaks, leagues and daily challenges. Triumph earns a service fee on each competition.

The backend decides who plays whom, scores every game, pays out winners and keeps play fair, across millions of games a week. You will work on:

Game modes and tournaments. Build and evolve async tournaments, blitz, streaks, leagues, challenges and new formats to engage in skill based games.
Matchmaking. Pair players by skill so matches are fast and fair, even in small pools.
Real-time multiplayer. Own live matches end to end: spin up game servers, connect players with low latency, and settle results.
Rewards and offers. Build the personalization engine that gives each player the right reward or offer at the right time.
Integrity. Work with fraud and payments to detect collusion, score tampering and multi-accounting.
Scalability. Build and improve backend scalability to support the next 10x of growth.

QUALIFICATIONS

3+ years of experience as a backend engineer (Go is nice)
Experience with storage systems (e.g., databases, object stores, or distributed file systems)
Strong collaboration skills and the ability to work across work streams within your team and contribute to your peers' success
A strong personal slope and desire to grow one's career

WHY TRIUMPH?

High growth. Build a high-scale consumer platform that touches gaming, finance, and social with the autonomy to set our web direction.
High agency. Small, high-impact engineering team that is growing rapidly with significant opportunity for leadership and growth.
High energy. Passionate team who are proud of our work and velocity.
Competitive salary and benefits. $400/mo lunch credit, healthcare, vision, dental, 401k, etc.

Our team gathers 5 days a week at Triumph’s headquarters in San Francisco.
