Overview
Who we are
Collaborative. Respectful. A place to dream and do. These are just a few words that describe what life is like at Toyota. As one of the world’s most admired brands, Toyota is growing and leading the future of mobility through innovative, high-quality solutions designed to enhance lives and delight those we serve. We’re looking for talented team members who want to Dream. Do. Grow. with us.
An important part of the Toyota family is Toyota Financial Services (TFS), the finance and insurance brand for Toyota and Lexus in North America. While TFS is a separate business entity, it is an essential part of this world-changing company- delivering on Toyota's vision to move people beyond what's possible. At TFS, you will help create best-in-class customer experience in an innovative, collaborative environment.
Toyota does not offer support or sponsorship of job applicants for employment-based visas or any other work authorization for this role now or in the future. You must have the right to work in the United States and not require Toyota support or sponsorship for immigration-related employment (e.g., H-1B, O-1, E-3, H-1B1, TN, F-1 OPT, F-1 STEM OPT, F-1 CPT, ‘job flexibility benefits’ [also known as I-140 or Adjustment of Status portability], etc.) now or in the future. You should not apply for this role if you will require Toyota to assist with immigration support or sponsorship now or in the future.
Who we're looking for At TFS, we're building next-generation products that redefine mobility for millions of customers worldwide. We're looking for a Lead Engineer - an individual contributor who brings strong front-end expertise, solid full-stack instincts, and the technical leadership to elevate our engineering teams. This isn't a management role. It's for the engineer who others look to for guidance: the one who influences architecture decisions, mentors peers, tackles tough problems, and consistently raises the bar. You'll own critical features end-to-end, drive technical decisions within your team, and help shape how we build great products.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the design and implementation of complex front-end features, from initial architecture to production deployment
- Design, build, and maintain full-stack features - from polished UIs to the APIs and services that power them
- Drive technical design discussions and architecture decisions within your team and project domain
- Identify and resolve technical issues: performance bottlenecks, reliability gaps, and tech debt that impacts delivery
- Own debugging and troubleshooting across the full stack - from browser rendering issues to API performance to infrastructure challenges
- Establish and champion engineering best practices within your team: code quality, testing strategies, and deployment standards
- Collaborate closely with Product, Design, and engineering teammates to shape features and ensure technical feasibility
- Mentor and grow engineers through code reviews, pairing, design feedback, and technical guidance
- Contribute to hiring by participating in technical interviews and helping identify strong frontend engineering talent
- Communicate technical decisions, tradeoffs, and risks clearly to both engineering and non-technical stakeholders
What you bring
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field, or equivalent practical experience
- 5+ years of software engineering experience with a strong front-end focus and a track record of technical leadership
- Strong expertise in React and Next.js, including App Router, SSR, SSG, and modern rendering patterns
- Proficiency in TypeScript - you use it confidently and help others adopt it effectively
- Hands-on experience with Tailwind CSS and component libraries like shadcn/ui or similar design system tooling
- Solid understanding of state management patterns using Zustand, Redux Toolkit, or equivalent
- Experience with schema validation and form handling using Zod or similar libraries
- Ability to design and build RESTful and GraphQL APIs, including API contract design, error handling, and type-safe client integration
- Experience working with serverless backend services on AWS, including:
- API Gateway + Lambda for serverless API development
- CloudFront for edge logic and caching
- S3 for asset storage and static hosting
- DynamoDB or RDS for basic data persistence patterns
- Strong understanding of front-end performance: Core Web Vitals, code splitting, lazy loading, image optimization, and bundle optimization
- Experience debugging complex issues across the full stack - browser devtools, network analysis, log investigation, and basic distributed tracing
- Solid experience with testing: unit (Vitest/Jest), component (Testing Library), integration, and E2E (Playwright/Cypress)
- Familiarity with modern build systems and tooling (Vite, esbuild, Webpack, Turborepo, or Nx)
- Strong communication skills - you can document technical decisions, lead design discussions, and explain tradeoffs clearly
Added bonus if you have
- Master's degree in Computer Science or related field
- Experience in the financial services, banking, or insurance industry
- Experience building or contributing to a design system or component library used across multiple projects
- Familiarity with micro-frontend architecture patterns
- Experience with event-driven architecture on AWS using EventBridge, SQS, SNS, and Lambda
- Experience with React Native or cross-platform mobile development
- Exposure to GenAI tooling integration in front-end products (e.g., streaming AI responses, prompt UIs)
- AWS certifications (Solutions Architect, Developer Associate)
- Experience contributing to or maintaining open-source front-end projects
- Experience writing ADRs or leading technical initiatives within your team
What we’ll bring During your interview process, our team can fill you in on all the details of our industry-leading benefits and career development opportunities. A few highlights include:
- A work environment built on teamwork, flexibility, and respect
- Professional growth and development programs to help advance your career, as well as tuition reimbursement
- Team Member Vehicle Purchase Discount
- Toyota Team Member Lease Vehicle Program (if applicable)
- Comprehensive health care and wellness plans for your entire family
- Toyota 401(k) Savings Plan featuring a company match, as well as an annual retirement contribution from Toyota regardless of whether you contribute (if applicable)
- Paid holidays and paid time off
- Referral services related to prenatal services, adoption, childcare, schools and more
- Tax Advantaged Accounts (Health Savings Account, Health Care FSA, Dependent Care FSA)
- Relocation assistance (if applicable)
