Original job description

Thornton Tomasetti applies engineering and scientific principles to solve the world’s challenges. An independent organization of creative thinkers and innovative doers collaborating from offices worldwide, our mission is to bring our clients' ideas to life and, in the process, lay the groundwork for a better, more resilient future. We provide support and opportunities to our employees to achieve their full potential and cultivate a rewarding career.

Our Applied Science practice leverages a unique combination of technologies and expertise to engineer practical solutions to problems of national and international importance. We apply expertise in solid and fluid dynamics, materials science, acoustics, risk assessments and computational simulation methods to solve complex problems. We perform research, mathematical modeling, software development and design to manage risks to life safety in military platforms and installations, ships and submarines, critical infrastructure, tall buildings, public facilities, industrial and petrochemical plants and automotive and airborne vehicles. Military, government, corporate and academic clients value the validation of Applied Science’s software and the critical insights gained from correlating analysis with testing.

Your Role Thornton Tomasetti’s Applied Science practice combines structural engineering, computational simulation, and applied research to solve complex problems across civilian and government applications. We are seeking a structural engineer with 3+ years of experience who is interested in applying and developing expertise in finite element modeling (FEM) and analysis.

As a Project Engineer in the Applied Science Practice, you will take on a key technical and coordination role, owning complex design challenges, guiding junior engineers, and shaping the delivery of innovative solutions. You will work across disciplines, lead and coordinate multi-disciplinary technical tasks, and step into client-facing opportunities.

What You’ll Do

Lead and refine structural analysis, design, and detailing tasks in critical infrastructure applications. Adapt technical skills and solve project challenges with strong engineering judgement.
Develop, run, and postprocess finite element models to investigate structural behavior, including nonlinear and dynamic response as project needs require.
Assess structural vulnerability to extreme loads and help develop engineering solutions to improve performance and protect structures.
Drive the quality of deliverables by organizing information clearly, reviewing junior engineer’s work, and tailoring output to project scope and contractor needs. Prepare clear technical deliverables, including calculations, reports, drawings, data visualizations, and presentations.
Coordinate with multidisciplinary project teams, communicate technical findings to colleagues and clients, and contribute to project planning.

What You’ll Bring

Master’s degree or PhD in Civil, or Structural Engineering.
3+ years of professional structural engineering experience. PE licensure, or progress toward licensure, is preferred.
Proficiency with structural analysis and design software such as SAP2000, ETABS, RAM, Revit, and Rhino and experience designing steel and concrete systems.
A demonstrated interest in finite element modeling. Prior academic or professional experience creating, running, and postprocessing FEA simulations is preferred.
Strong technical writing, communication, organization, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to manage priorities and collaborate across disciplines.

This position will support US Government projects. As part of the US government contract requirements, all project staff must be able to secure US security clearance. US security clearance requires the applicant to be a US citizen.

Compensation

The rate for this position generally is $100,000 - $120,000 annually. This range is a good faith estimate provided pursuant to the New York Pay Transparency Law. Similar positions located outside of New York will not necessarily receive the same compensation. Actual pay rates may vary from the range, as permitted by New York Equal Pay Transparency Law. Compensation offers will be based on various factors, including operational needs, individual education, qualifications and experience, work location and comparison to employee already in the role, as well as other considerations permitted by law. A potential new employee’s pay history will not be used in compensation decisions.

Benefits

Depending on your employment status, benefits may include:

Medical, Dental, Vision, Life, AD&D, Disability and other voluntary benefits
