Original job description

Archived listing. The details below describe a past opening.

Thornton Tomasetti applies engineering and scientific principles to solve the world’s challenges. An independent organization of creative thinkers and innovative doers collaborating from offices worldwide, our mission is to bring our clients' ideas to life and, in the process, lay the groundwork for a better, more resilient future. We provide support and opportunities to our employees to achieve their full potential and cultivate a rewarding career.

Our Structural Engineering practice collaborates with architects, building owners, and builders to design elegant solutions for projects of all types, sizes, and levels of complexity. From designing the world’s tallest buildings and most extended spans to engineering inventive “jewel-box” structures and designing major expansion projects, we continually seek the best balance among the demands of form, function, sustainability, constructability, schedule, and budget.

Your Role As a Senior Associate in our Structural Practice, you’ll step into a role where your expertise drives project direction, client strategy, and technical excellence. You’ll serve as a trusted advisor to major clients, guide teams through complex building challenges, and shape firm-wide thinking on innovation and growth. This is a high-impact role for engineers ready to influence both technical outcomes and business strategy.

What You’ll Do

Own the technical vision of building projects of a variety of sizes and complexities, setting direction, leading independent technical reviews, and defining best-in-class solutions.
Serve as the primary client partner, building trusted relationships, anticipating needs, and creating long-term strategic impact.
Lead and grow high-performing teams, managing and delegating both technical and management responsibilities across multiple staff.
Drive new business and market presence in the Midwest and greater Kansas City region through high-level proposal development, thought leadership, and visible industry engagement.
Shape firm strategy, developing your own business roadmap and advising senior leadership on opportunities, markets, and emerging trends.
Strengthen our position in the industry by deepening expertise, building your personal brand, and helping the firm expand into new opportunities.

What You’ll Bring

Bachelor’s degree in Civil, Structural, or Architectural Engineering; Master’s degree preferred.
Professional Engineer (PE) and/or Structural Engineer (SE) licensure.
10+ years of structural engineering experience, with a track record of leading complex building projects across steel, concrete, timber, seismic design, tall buildings, and specialty structures.
Proven ability to build trusted client relationships in Kansas City, provide strategic guidance, drive business development, and contribute to the growth of your practice.
Leadership that inspires and guides teams through mentoring, empowerment, and effective communication, while actively growing your client-facing presence.

Benefits

Depending on your employment status, benefits may include:

Medical, Dental, Vision, Life, AD&D, Disability and other voluntary benefits
Flexible Spending Accounts for Medical & Childcare
Paid Time Off, Family Leave for New Parents, Volunteer Time
Tuition Reimbursement
Commuter Transit (where available)
401k retirement savings with Company matching on employee contributions and/or qualified student loan repayments

And other various wellness, diversity/inclusion and employee resource programs and initiatives
