Original job description
TerraPower is a nuclear technology company based in Bellevue, Washington. At its core, the company is working to raise living standards globally through a more affordable, secure, and environmentally friendly form of nuclear energy along with innovations in medical isotopes to improve human health. In 2006, TerraPower originated with Bill Gates and a group of like-minded visionaries who evaluated the fundamental challenges to raising living standards around the world. They recognized energy access was crucial to the health and economic well-being of communities and decided that the private sector needed to take action and create energy sources that would advance global energy deployment. TerraPower’s mission is to be a world leader in new nuclear technologies, while developing innovators and future leaders in the nuclear field. As a result, the company’s activities in the fields of nuclear energy and related sciences are yielding significant innovations in the safety and economics of nuclear power, hybrid energy and medical applications – all for significant human health benefits.
TerraPower is seeking to hire highly motivated and forward-thinking professionals who are interested in focusing on advanced nuclear reactor research and development and influencing change within the nuclear power landscape and bringing forward the critical production of medical isotopes. TerraPower is an Equal Opportunity Employer. We do not discriminate in hiring on the basis of sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, race, color, religious creed, national origin, physical or mental disability, protected Veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by federal, state, or local law.
Field Engineering Work Package Planner
TerraPower is seeking a Field Engineering Work Package Planner to plan, assemble, issue, and close out construction work packages (CWPs) for QL-3 and commercial field construction work on the Natrium Demonstration Project, TerraPower’s advanced sodium-cooled fast reactor under construction near Kemmerer, Wyoming. The Planner owns each work package from quality level screening through closeout and keeps the CWP Status Log, the controlling record of package status. The role works closely with the Construction Manager, Field Engineer, Constructors, Site Design Engineering, Project Controls, and Records Management so that crews start work only with a complete, correctly scoped package at current document revisions. This is an onsite position reporting to the Engineering Integration Manager.
Key Responsibilities
- Screen the scope of each proposed package for quality level. Confirm every item is QL-3 or commercial, route work that is QL-1/QL-2 or could affect a QL-1/QL-2 item to the appropriate procedure, and obtain the quality level in writing from Site Design Engineering when it is not shown on the IFC documents.
- Assemble each CWP from the required contents: IFC drawings and specifications at the current ATOM revision, answered RFIs, approved Field Changes and submittals, scope statement and work area markup, sequence, safety documents, completion package list, and Work Record forms. Coordinate the Field Engineer’s inputs (inspection and test plan, work steps and sketches, materials and test equipment).
- Maintain the release readiness checklist by listing every open RFI, constraint, and prerequisite and following each to resolution, so packages reach the Construction Manager ready for release.
- Sign as preparer when package contents are complete. Brief the Constructor on scope and limits, Hold Points, safety requirements, and the Completion Package, and file the released CWP through the project’s approved records process.
- Check each released CWP against current ATOM revisions at least weekly. When a document or Field Change affects a package, notify the Constructor and Field Engineer to hold the affected work, and prepare and issue the CWP revision.
- Review the Completion Package, support field walkdowns and acceptance, confirm Punch List and record closure, and close out and file the completed CWP.
- Work with Project Controls on package sequence and schedule. Identify documents that must be issued or revised to support upcoming packages, and communicate need-by dates to Site Design Engineering and the Engineering Integration team.
- Track package development status and readiness in the project’s work package tools (e.g., Confluence, Jira) while keeping controlled records in ATOM and EDMS. Maintain open-item logs and raise emerging constraints early to the Construction Manager, Field Engineer, and Engineering Integration Manager.
- Stay within the role’s boundaries: route technical questions about the design through the RFI process and changes to IFC content through the Field Change process, give no design direction, and do not sign more than one of the Planner, Field Engineer, and Construction Manager blocks on the same CWP.
- Follow all site safety requirements and report unsafe conditions promptly.
Key Qualifications and Skills
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Construction Management, or a related technical discipline from an ABET accredited institution, or equivalent experience.
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in field engineering, construction engineering, or construction support on power generation, nuclear, or large industrial projects
- Ability to read and interpret drawings, specifications, and isometrics.
- Experience with nuclear quality requirements (NQA-1, 10 CFR 50 Appendix B) is preferred.
- Familiarity with 3D model viewing tools and construction document control systems.
- Proficiency in MS Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint. Experience with Primavera P6 is a plus.
- OSHA 10 or 30 certification is preferred.
- Ability to meet site access requirements, including training and any screening required.
- Strong oral and written communication skills and attention to detail.
- The successful candidate will possess a high degree of trust and integrity, communicate openly and display respect, and a desire to foster teamwork.
This position is subject to qualification requirements in accordance with ANSI/ANS 3.1. Candidates must meet the minimum education and experience criteria applicable to the role, including relevant nuclear industry experience where required. Verification of data will be part of the hiring process.
