Original job description

Passionate about precision medicine and advancing the healthcare industry?

Recent advancements in underlying technology have finally made it possible for AI to impact clinical care in a meaningful way. Tempus' proprietary platform connects an entire ecosystem of real-world evidence to deliver real-time, actionable insights to physicians, providing critical information about the right treatments for the right patients, at the right time.

Join the Revolution in Precision Medicine: At Tempus, we're leveraging cutting-edge technology to transform healthcare through AI-powered insights. Our proprietary platform connects real-world evidence to deliver actionable intelligence to physicians, ensuring the right treatments reach the right patients at precisely the right time.

Our Engineering Culture: We operate in small, autonomous teams where developers, designers, scientists, and product managers collaborate closely. You'll have direct ownership in building solutions that make a meaningful impact in cancer research and treatment. Our agile approach and modern architecture enable us to innovate rapidly while maintaining the highest standards of quality and scalability.

About the Role: We are seeking a highly motivated and capable Senior Software Engineer to help advance our Genomics AI initiatives. In this role, you will lead the analysis and design of complex technical problems, architect robust systems, and mentor emerging talent. This position requires deep expertise in full-stack engineering, relational data systems, and algorithmic development. As a senior technical leader, you will be expected to craft high-quality code while leveraging modern AI tooling, integrating Generative AI APIs into user-facing applications, and embedding agentic workflows into our core product ecosystem.

Technical Requirements

5+ years of advanced TypeScript/JavaScript development with deep understanding of language features and optimization techniques.
Extensive experience architecting and leading development with Node.js and NestJS frameworks.
Expert-level React development with demonstrated ability to design and implement complex component systems.
Hands-on experience leveraging GenAI coding tools and autonomous agents (e.g., Copilot, Cursor, LLM APIs) to accelerate development, refactor codebases, and auto-generate comprehensive unit/integration tests.
Experience or strong working knowledge of integrating LLM APIs and GenAI technologies into production applications.
Advanced PostgreSQL skills including query optimization, indexing strategies, and performance tuning.
Proven expertise implementing sophisticated Redis caching solutions for high-throughput systems.
Demonstrated success designing and implementing distributed microservice architectures.
Significant experience orchestrating infrastructure and applications on GCP, including CI/CD pipelines.
Mastery of enterprise-level design patterns and their practical application in large-scale, mission-critical systems.

What Makes You a Great Fit

7+ years of software development experience with a track record of technical leadership.
Ability to make high-impact architectural decisions that balance business needs with technical considerations.
Enthusiasm for championing AI-assisted development practices, driving adoption of agentic workflows, and mentoring teams through the evolving landscape of AI tools.
History of successfully delivering complex projects in fast-paced environments.
Strong communication skills with experience presenting technical solutions to diverse stakeholders.
Proven ability to drive cross-team technical initiatives and resolve complex engineering challenges.

Bonus Points

Experience with search technologies such as Elasticsearch or OpenSearch.
Experience with containerization orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes).
Background in biotech, genomics, or precision medicine.
Success leading system migrations between cloud platforms (e.g., AWS to GCP).

CHI: $110,000-$160,000
