Mechanical Design Engineer

DescriptionPSA is seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer to own mechanical subsystems from problem definition and concept through drawings, build and field use. Example projects include a two-axis camera positioner and an integrated camera and flash housing for BenchBot, redesigns that make the machine cheaper to build and more durable, and a sealed die cast camera housing that packages multiple PCBs, dense connectors and a removable SSD, developed closely with the electrical team.The engineer will produce production-ready models, drawings and bills of materials; select bearings, fasteners and motion components; and design for outside CNC, sheet metal, fabrication and casting vendors. When parts arrive, the designer installs them on the prototype machine, verifies fit and function, and modifies parts in the in-house shop as needed. The role also supports occasional deliveries at partner sites and guides interns on the subsystems they own.The team moves at a startup pace without shipping rough work. The role reports to the Mechanical Engineering Lead and is a contract-to-hire opportunity with planned conversion to a full-time NC State University position. Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field 4+ years of professional mechanical design with multiple designs taken to built hardware Strong 3D CAD with large, multi-part assemblies (Onshape preferred; any major tool accepted) Manufacturing drawings with tolerancing, GD&T and tolerance stack-up analysis DFM for CNC machining and sheet metal; design for at least one casting or molding process Prototyping and testing to verify and iterate on designs A portfolio of past designs (drawings or photos of built hardware) to discussAdditional Skills & Qualifications Motion systems: servo motors, gearboxes, linear guides, belts, ball screws Electromechanical packaging and cable/harness routing for moving or outdoor equipment Sealed, IP-rated enclosures with external connectors and user-serviceable parts Hands-on machining and fabrication; machine design or industrial automation experienceJob Type & LocationThis is a Contract to Hire position based out of Raleigh, NC. Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $45.00 - $55.00/hr.
