However, deep data center knowledge is critical. This individual must understand how data centers operate at the infrastructure level in order to evaluate the current environment, recognize capacity and resiliency concerns, identify risks and information gaps, and recommend the right path forward. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience working within complex data center or mission-critical environments and understand how power, cooling, electrical and mechanical infrastructure, redundancy, resiliency, physical space, capacity, and future technology requirements all work together. The role will take technical information from multiple stakeholders and turn it into a clear strategy that can guide future data center planning and investment decisions.Key Responsibilities
- Lead a strategic assessment of an existing data center environment to understand its current capabilities, limitations, risks, and future considerations.
- Review existing data center documentation, infrastructure drawings, equipment information, electrical and mechanical data, load information, capacity information, operating information, and previous assessments.
- Develop a clear current-state picture of the data center, including power, cooling, electrical systems, mechanical systems, physical space, redundancy, resiliency, capacity, and operational considerations.
- Evaluate current and anticipated capacity requirements and determine where existing infrastructure may become constrained.
- Work closely with data center, infrastructure, engineering, facilities, networking, systems, operations, and project stakeholders to understand current requirements and future needs.
- Identify gaps in available information and determine what may require additional engineering analysis, physical verification, monitoring, testing, or data collection.
- Evaluate risks and constraints related to power availability, cooling, redundancy, resiliency, physical capacity, infrastructure condition, and future scalability.
- Determine what technical and operational questions must be answered before major data center investment decisions can be made.
- Develop and evaluate strategic options involving existing infrastructure, targeted improvements, modernization, expansion, or additional/replacement capacity.
- Compare potential strategies from technical, operational, financial, risk, and long-term infrastructure perspectives.
- Determine where additional engineering or technical analysis is required before final recommendations can be made.
- Develop the scope and business case for more comprehensive data center assessments and future planning efforts.
- Translate complex data center infrastructure findings into clear strategic recommendations and business considerations.
- Present findings, risks, options, and recommendations to both technical stakeholders and senior decision-makers.
- Develop a roadmap outlining recommended next steps and providing a foundation for long-term data center planning.
Required Qualifications
- Deep professional experience working specifically with data centers, mission-critical facilities, or critical infrastructure environments.
- Strong understanding of how data center environments operate and how their major infrastructure components work together.
- Strong knowledge of data center electrical and mechanical infrastructure.
- Experience evaluating power distribution, cooling, redundancy, resiliency, capacity, physical space, and infrastructure constraints.
- Experience assessing existing data center facilities and identifying risks, limitations, capacity concerns, and future requirements.
- Experience with data center capacity planning and future-state infrastructure planning.
- Experience developing data center strategies, infrastructure assessments, feasibility studies, capital plans, or business cases.
- Ability to evaluate complex technical information and turn findings into strategic recommendations.
- Ability to identify what is known, what information is missing, and where deeper engineering investigation is necessary.
- Experience communicating data center infrastructure findings to both technical teams and leadership.
- Strong analytical, documentation, presentation, and stakeholder communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- BICSI Data Center Design Consultant (DCDC)
- Uptime Institute Accredited Tier Designer (ATD) or Accredited Tier Specialist (ATS)
- Professional Engineer (PE) license in electrical or mechanical engineering
- RCDD or another relevant BICSI credential
- Experience with DCIM and data center capacity management
- Experience with data center infrastructure documentation
- Project management or capital planning experience
Ideal CandidateThe strongest candidate will be someone who truly understands data centers but has progressed beyond simply operating or maintaining them. This person should be able to evaluate an existing data center environment, understand how the infrastructure fits together, recognize potential risks and constraints, identify what information is missing, and determine what needs to be investigated before major decisions are made. This role requires someone who combines strong data center infrastructure knowledge with strategic thinking. They need to understand the technical details well enough to challenge assumptions while also being able to step back, evaluate the bigger picture, and develop recommendations for the future.
