Original job description

Company Description The Daily Beast delivers award-winning original reporting and sharp opinion from big personalities in the arenas of politics, pop-culture, world news and more. Fiercely independent and armed with irreverent intelligence, The Daily Beast now reaches more than 20 million readers per month. The Daily Beast is based in New York and is an operating business of IAC (NASDAQ: IAC)

Job Description

The Daily Beast is looking for a devops engineer who is passionate about building custom infrastructure to support the success of online journalism. The Daily Beast embraces technology and heavily invests in building custom software to support our business. We focus on full stack solutions and leverage open source software where it makes sense, and the engineers work on all parts of the stack each and every day. The infrastructure that runs our website and CMS has gone through multiple iterations and we are proud of the stability and scale we've achieved through trial and error. We are now looking for someone who is comfortable with our technology to lead the architecture of our platform and take it to the next level.

Qualifications

For this position, we're looking for someone with at least 5 years of experience managing infrastructure on one of the major cloud platforms (AWS, Google Cloud Platform, Azure). You should be comfortable with principles of highly available software: load balancing, auto scaling, caching, and disaster recovery. We manage our own databases and search engines, and run all of our applications in containers. You should be familiar with Docker, and different orchestration systems like Kubernetes and AWS ECS. You will also be responsible for managing our CI/CD platform and setting up valuable performance, stability, and security monitoring. Our current infrastructure has a small footprint but handles a huge amount of traffic: we support over a million users a day on half a dozen servers and a few database read replicas. The most common technology you will work with is Node.js, PostgreSQL and Elasticsearch, running in the form of RESTful APIs and GraphQL servers, and a little bit of serverless. We write everything in javascript and a little bit of bash. We heavily leverage Cloudflare for our CDN, for DNS, and to handle various redirects and security rules. Additional Information We are a small and dynamic team that builds products from MVP to maturity and we support all of our software and infrastructure along the way. As a member of our technology team, you’ll work alongside the creative director, engineers, product managers and stakeholders from the newsroom and business teams. Because The Daily Beast has such a large audience, the work you do will have a direct impact on millions of people and you will be presented with new challenges and problems to work on each day. The Daily Beast is a globally recognized publication at IAC HQ in pristine Chelsea in New York City. Being part of IAC, we are able to provide you some of the best in benefits. We offer discretionary vacation (as in take what you need with approval for all exempt and non-guild employees), tuition reimbursement, 401(k) matching, subsidized gym membership, stocked kitchens with snacks and drinks, and excuses to celebrate all the time! Work for us and work for something spectacular! We are an equal opportunity employer and value diversity at our company. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, color, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status.
