Job Title: Lead Software Engineer Location: Reston, VA Type: Contract Compensation: $88/hr Work Model: Hybrid

Overview

We are seeking a Lead Software Engineer to support a multi-year cloud modernization initiative focused on migrating enterprise applications from on-premises and mainframe environments to AWS. This role is heavily centered on Java backend development, application modernization, cloud readiness, and integration work, helping transform legacy systems into scalable, cloud-native solutions. The ideal candidate will have strong experience with Java, AWS, Kubernetes/EKS, cloud migrations, and enterprise application integrations. This is not a DevOps role; the focus is application-level engineering, modernization, and cloud adoption.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the design, development, testing, and deployment of enhancements supporting cloud migration initiatives.
  • Develop and modernize Java-based enterprise applications running in AWS and Kubernetes environments.
  • Support migration of application connectivity from on-premises and mainframe systems to cloud-supported technologies such as MongoDB and PostgreSQL.
  • Design and implement integrations, authentication mechanisms (OAuth2/JWT), and application configurations required for cloud deployment.
  • Collaborate with Platform Engineering, DevOps, Product Owners, and business stakeholders to ensure cloud-ready solutions.
  • Identify technical gaps, evaluate risks, and recommend solutions to improve application performance, scalability, and reliability.
  • Participate in Agile ceremonies, estimation, planning, and feature delivery.
  • Ensure adherence to enterprise architecture standards, DevSecOps practices, and coding best practices.
  • Support application modernization, cloud-native architecture adoption, and microservices development.
  • Mentor junior engineers and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.
  • 8+ years of software engineering experience, including design, development, testing, and requirements analysis.
  • Strong Java development experience with a focus on backend engineering.
  • 3+ years of AWS experience.
  • 3+ years of Amazon EKS and Kubernetes experience, including Helm Charts and Istio.
  • 3+ years of experience with OAuth2 and JWT authentication.
  • Experience integrating applications with databases, APIs, and enterprise systems.
  • Experience supporting cloud migration and application modernization initiatives.
  • Experience with MongoDB and/or PostgreSQL.
  • Experience integrating legacy on-premises applications with cloud-based solutions.
  • Experience working in Agile development environments.

Preferred

  • Full-stack development experience with a primary focus on backend development (approximately 80% backend / 20% frontend).
  • Experience with cloud-native architectures and microservices.
  • Experience with Angular (Angular 18+ preferred), HTML, and modern UI technologies.
  • Experience modernizing database connectivity and migrating legacy integrations to cloud platforms.
  • Familiarity with mainframe-connected applications.
  • Knowledge of CI/CD pipelines, SDLC, DevSecOps practices, and enterprise deployment standards.
