Senior Design Systems Designer
Location: Remote (U.S.) Schedule: Full-time, 40 hours/week, aligned with Eastern Time business hours Duration: Approximately 5–6-month contract
About the Role
We're looking for a hands-on Senior Design Systems Designer to help refine, expand, and maintain an established design system supporting multiple brands and digital experiences.
This role is focused on component consistency, scalable UI patterns, and high-quality execution in Figma. You'll work closely with an existing design systems designer who has already established the system's foundations, helping build on that work as new components, variations, and brand requirements are introduced.
Rather than developing a new design system from scratch, you'll focus on improving what already exists - identifying inconsistencies, refining reusable components, maintaining shared standards, and ensuring components are documented and ready for engineering implementation.
We're looking for someone who enjoys the detailed, hands-on work of design systems and is comfortable collaborating within an established design direction.
What You'll Do
-
Design, refine, and maintain reusable components within an existing Figma design system, including variants, properties, variables, and design tokens.
-
Identify and resolve inconsistencies across components, interaction patterns, responsive behaviors, and brand implementations.
-
Support the expansion of a shared design system across multiple brands while balancing common standards with brand-specific requirements.
-
Collaborate closely with the existing design systems designer to prioritize component improvements, execute updates, and maintain the integrity of the system.
-
Audit existing components and patterns to identify opportunities for consolidation, simplification, and improved consistency.
-
Create and maintain organized Figma component libraries with clear naming conventions, component properties, states, and usage guidelines.
-
Document responsive behavior, interaction states, accessibility considerations, and component specifications to support development.
-
Partner with engineering to ensure designs are practical to implement and remain consistent across design and production.
-
Support components used across customer-facing digital experiences, including search, forms, selection flows, and transactional interactions.
-
Maintain and evolve existing components without unnecessarily disrupting established patterns or downstream implementations.
What We're Looking For
-
5+ years of UX/UI or Product Design experience, with substantial recent hands-on design systems work.
-
Advanced Figma expertise, particularly reusable components, Auto Layout, variants, component properties, variables, and design tokens.
-
Demonstrated experience extending and improving an existing design system, rather than exclusively building new systems from scratch.
-
Strong understanding of component consistency, reusable patterns, visual standards, and scalable UI architecture.
-
Experience supporting shared design systems across multiple products, platforms, or brands.
-
Ability to create clear component documentation, including interaction states, responsive behaviors, accessibility requirements, and engineering specifications.
-
Familiarity with WCAG accessibility principles and how they apply to reusable UI components.
-
Experience collaborating directly with developers to support component implementation and design-to-development consistency.
-
Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to execute independently while working collaboratively with an established design systems owner.
-
Ability to clearly explain personal contributions to design systems projects, including the components designed, problems solved, and improvements delivered.
Nice to Have
-
Experience supporting multi-brand or white-label design systems.
-
Background in hospitality, travel, e-commerce, or other consumer-facing digital platforms.
-
Experience with transactional components such as search, date selection, forms, booking, checkout, or account management.
-
Familiarity with Storybook, design system documentation platforms, or CMS-driven websites.
-
Experience working on large-scale digital transformations or component standardization initiatives.
Portfolio Expectations
A portfolio demonstrating recent, hands-on design systems work is required.
We're particularly interested in examples that show:
-
Components or component families you've personally designed, refined, or expanded in Figma.
-
How you identified and resolved inconsistencies within an existing design system.
-
Your approach to reusable components, variants, tokens, and responsive behavior.
-
How you've maintained consistency across different products or brands.
-
How you collaborated with engineering and documented components for implementation.
-
The specific decisions you made, your individual contributions, and the resulting improvements.
We value clear, practical examples of real design systems work over high-level system overviews or purely conceptual projects.
What Success Looks Like
You'll help an established design system become more consistent, complete, and scalable as it expands across brands and digital experiences.
Success means delivering high-quality, reusable components, reducing inconsistencies, supporting engineering implementation, and making meaningful progress within the existing design direction.
This is a hands-on individual contributor role focused on execution, collaboration, and component quality - not a role focused on redefining the overall design system strategy.
The hourly pay range for this position (dependent on factors including but not limited to client requirements, experience, statutory considerations, and location) is $60.000 to $70.00/hr. Benefits available to full-time employees: medical, dental, vision, disability, life insurance, 401k and commuter benefits.
