DevOps Engineer

Description Synapse ITS builds SYO, an intelligent cloud ecosystem that helps cities and DOTs respond to faults faster and keep intersections running safely and efficiently. We're hiring a mid-level DevOps Engineer to help run, automate and secure the platform behind SYO. You'll work with a distributed engineering team, and you'll play a key part in our SOC 2 compliance work.

Responsibilities:

• Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines for automated build, test, security scanning and deployment.
• Provision and manage cloud infrastructure with Infrastructure as Code (Terraform, Terragrunt or similar).
• Operate containerized workloads on Kubernetes or managed container services, including scaling, upgrades and cost tuning.
• Set up and improve monitoring, logging, alerting and dashboards so you can track availability, latency and the health of device and data pipelines.
• Respond quickly to production support issues and incidents, troubleshoot and fix problems, run root-cause analysis and write blameless postmortems.
• Implement SOC 2 controls, including access management, encryption, patching and audit evidence.
• Manage backup, disaster recovery and high-availability setups, and test them against RTO/RPO targets.
• Help developers across time zones with environment setup, release coordination and troubleshooting.
• Write and maintain runbooks, architecture diagrams and operational procedures.
• Find manual toil and automate it.

Requirements

• 3–5 years in DevOps, SRE or cloud infrastructure roles.
• Hands-on production experience with at least one major cloud provider (AWS, Azure or GCP).
• Strong skills with IaC tools, ideally Terraform and Terragrunt.
• Experience with Docker and Kubernetes (EKS, AKS, GKE or self-managed).
• Experience with CI/CD tools such as GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, Azure DevOps or Jenkins.
• Scripting skills in Bash and Python, Go or PowerShell.
• Solid Linux, networking (DNS, TLS, load balancing, VPC/VNet) and Git fundamentals.
• Experience with observability tools such as Google Cloud Monitoring, Cloud Logging and Grafana.
• Clear written and verbal communication in English, and comfort working asynchronously with a distributed team.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience supporting SOC 2, ISO 27001 or similar compliance programs.
• Exposure to IoT, edge devices or real-time data streaming (MQTT, Kafka, Pub/Sub).
• Familiarity with GitOps (Argo CD, Flux) and Helm.
• Background in traffic, smart city or mission-critical systems.

What Success Looks (First 6-12 Months):

• Deployments are fully automated with a documented rollback path.
• Monitoring covers SYO's critical services, with actionable alerts and fewer false pages.
• You own a defined set of SOC 2 controls and their evidence collection.
• Incident response time and deployment frequency both improve measurably.
