Summary The Commodity Specialist is responsible for developing and executing sourcing strategies that support the company’s operational, quality, and financial objectives. This role focuses on assigned non-ferrous metals (such as aluminum, copper, brass, bronze, and related alloys) and non-metallic materials (such as plastics, elastomers, insulation, and composites). Commodity ownership is determined by the primary material and cost drivers rather than solely by product classification. This scope extends to components and assemblies where these materials significantly influence overall cost, such as copper-intensive wire and cable or diode assemblies utilizing aluminum extrusions. The role drives supplier strategy, contract negotiations, cost optimization, and supply risk mitigation in collaboration with Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality, Finance, and Supply Chain. Commodity ownership is flexible and will be transferred among Commodity Specialists as business needs and sourcing strategies evolve.
Responsibilities
- Develop and execute sourcing and category strategies for assigned non-ferrous and non-metallic commodities, including raw materials, components, and assemblies.
- Identify and manage sourcing opportunities across product categories where assigned materials represent significant cost drivers, regardless of traditional commodity or product classifications.
- Use commodity and market intelligence to identify cost reduction opportunities, mitigate risk, and drive continuous improvement.
- Lead cost optimization initiatives using Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) principles, should-cost analysis, value engineering, and alternative sourcing.
- Monitor relevant raw material pricing, market trends, supplier capabilities, and capacity constraints to support sourcing decisions.
- Support new product development (NPD) through supplier selection, early supplier engagement, and cost transparency, aligned with established commodity strategies.
- Negotiate pricing, commercial terms, and supplier agreements consistent with company requirements.
- Identify and manage supply risks, including supplier financial health, geopolitical exposure, capacity, quality, and operational continuity.
- Partner with Quality and Engineering on supplier qualification, evaluation, and ongoing performance improvement.
- Drive improvements in supplier cost, quality, delivery, responsiveness, and technical performance.
- Coordinate with other Commodity Specialists on changes in category assignments and ensure effective transfer of supplier knowledge, sourcing plans, and open initiatives.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain Management, Business, Engineering, or a related field.
- 5+ years of experience in strategic sourcing, procurement, or supply chain roles within a manufacturing environment.
- Experience managing supplier relationships and negotiating pricing and commercial terms.
- Strong analytical, communication, and cross-functional collaboration skills.
- Proficiency with ERP and sourcing systems (e.g., SAP, Oracle, SyteLine, or similar).
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience sourcing non-ferrous metals, fabricated or machined components, plastics, elastomers, insulation, composites, or related materials.
- Working knowledge of cost modeling, should-cost analysis, and TCO methodologies.
- Experience supporting new product development or engineering-driven manufacturing environments.
- Professional certification such as CPSM, CSCP, or equivalent.
- Proficiency with analytical and visualization tools (e.g., Power BI, Tableau, Advanced Excel) for spend analysis and supplier performance tracking.
