About Stem - Driven by human and artificial intelligence – Stem is unlocking energy intelligence. Stem is a global leader reimagining technology to support the energy transition. Turning complexity into clarity, and potential into performance. We help asset owners, operators and stakeholders benefit from the full value of their energy portfolio by enabling the intelligent development, deployment, and operation of clean energy assets. Our integrated software suite, PowerTrack, is the industry standard and best-in-class for asset monitoring, supported by professional and managed services, under one roof. Meant to tackle challenges as seamlessly as possible, Stem shows the information needed clearly and accurately and helps harness raw data to inform actionable insight. With global projects managed in 55 countries – from Germany to Japan and across North America – customers have relied on Stem for nearly 20 years to maximize the value of their clean energy projects.
Stem’s culture embodies diversity & inclusion beyond the traditional facets of gender, ethnicity, age, disabilities, and sexual orientation to include experience, personality, communication, work styles, and more. At our core, Stem is at the momentous intersection of clean energy and software technology where diverse ideas, experiences, and professional skills converge to make the inclusive culture we have today. Together, we are turning old school thoughts about software and energy into progressive, collaborative, and innovative solutions. By joining our team, you will be collaborating with data scientists, energy experts, skilled salespeople, thought-leading executives and more from a range of backgrounds. This intersection of ideas, beliefs, and skills is what makes us unique enough to lead the world’s largest network of digitally connected energy storage systems.
Position Overview:
As Director, Project Engineering – Americas, you will lead the Americas engineering organization and own the technical design and implementation of Data Acquisition Systems (DAS), SCADA, Power Plant Controllers (PPC), Energy Management Systems (EMS), and site networking for solar, energy storage, and hybrid projects across BTM and FTM, C&I, and utility-scale work. You will ensure engineering deliverables are technically correct, built to standard, and released on time and within budget, and you will scale the organization by turning custom engineering into standard designs and repeatable workflows. This role is the engineering counterpart to the Director of PMO. The PMO owns schedule, scope, and customer delivery. This role owns technical design, engineering quality, and engineering standards. Together, the two roles form the Americas delivery leadership team. The ideal leader is a hands-on technical expert who can also run an organization. This is someone who enjoys solving hard controls and SCADA problems, and who wants to build the processes, standards, and people that let the team deliver more projects at higher quality.
Organizational Scope:
Direct reports (all based in Broomfield, CO)
- Manager, Drafting & Design: Single-line diagrams, IFC packages, panel layouts, communication schematics, BOMs, and as-builts
- Manager, Project Engineering – C&I: DAS and monitoring, BTM storage, and C&I controls and export limiting
- Manager, Project Engineering – Utility: Utility SCADA, PPC, EMS, FTM BESS, interconnection and grid code compliance, and substation integration
Key partners (no direct reporting line)
- Sales, Technical Sales Engineering, PMO, Field Services, Support, and Project Delivery – EMEA
Key Responsibilities:
- Technical escalation: Act as the engineering escalation point for complex sites, non-standard configurations, and technical customer issues, working with Development on advanced product issues. Stay current on grid technology, grid codes, and microgrid architectures, and translate them into design standards.
- Global alignment: Align engineering procedures and best practices with the EMEA, India, and Japan engineering teams to support a consistent global delivery model.
- Sales support: Provide engineering review during the sales process, including intake forms, SOWs, risk identification, and budgetary proposals, and gate non-standard scope before contract.
- Cross-functional handoffs: Define clear handoffs with partner teams: field learnings into Product roadmaps, BOM accuracy and engineering change notices with Production, resource loading and engineering hour estimates with the PMO, and Tier 3 escalation paths with Support and Field Services. Measure process performance and improve the highest-cost handoff points.
- Drafting & Design: Maintain drawing standards, symbol libraries, and design templates, and drive automation and reuse of standard design blocks to increase throughput.
- C&I engineering: Lead PowerTrack Logger (PL1K/PL1K+) deployments and build standard C&I design offerings and configuration templates that support high project volume with short cycle times.
- Portfolio migrations: Support Draker-to-PowerTrack and other portfolio retrofit and migration programs from an engineering standpoint.
- Utility engineering: Partner with controls engineers on PPC and EMS integration, closed-loop tuning, and testing, and support plant commissioning, utility witness testing, and COD, with travel to critical sites as needed.
- New edge hardware: Lead engineering for first-time deployments of new edge hardware, including EMS, controllers, and PowerTrack Logger products, from beta through general availability.
- New market entry: Build engineering playbooks for new markets, starting with LATAM, covering local grid codes, equipment certifications, language, and local partners, and assess hardware and design compliance before the first commercial project.
- Engineering quality & safety: Ensure designs comply with NEC and applicable electrical codes, with documented commissioning and control handover procedures and FAT, SAT, and hardware-in-the-loop testing before field deployment. Own design control and change management through IFC release, document and training records, and root cause analysis and corrective action on deployed projects. Specify components from approved hardware lists and manage compliance (certificates of conformance, RoHS/REACH, end-of-life, shelf life), support customer, OEM, and internal quality audits, and track quality KPIs such as first-pass yield, post-IFC revision rate, and RCA closure time.
- Planning & operations: Own headcount planning, AOP budget input, OPEX tracking, and engineering capacity forecasting, and provide engineering KPIs on a weekly, monthly, and quarterly cadence. Lead SWBU process improvement initiatives and represent engineering in business reviews, acting on the SVP’s behalf as delegated.
- Team development: Lead, mentor, and develop engineering managers, and build growth tracks that develop entry-level engineers and drafters into senior and leadership roles.
Qualifications:
Required
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related engineering field.
- 12+ years of engineering experience in solar, energy storage, or a related power industry.
- 5+ years directly managing engineers, including managers of engineering teams, plus experience managing departmental budget and headcount.
- 5+ years designing or delivering utility-scale SCADA, PPC, or EMS solutions.
- Experience overseeing drafting and design teams producing SLDs, IFC packages, and BOMs.
- Knowledge of grid stability, interconnection requirements, and grid codes such as IEEE 1547, IEEE 2800, and NERC IBR requirements.
- Demonstrated experience with closed-loop control design, tuning, and troubleshooting, including PID and feed-forward architectures.
- Working knowledge of Modbus, DNP3, IEC 61850, and OPC protocols; serial, fiber, and Ethernet standards; and OT networking (switches, modems, firewalls, VPNs, LANs, VLANs).
- Experience working within a quality management system (design control, change management, RCA/corrective action) and building scalable processes in a growing organization.
- Strong communication skills with technical and non-technical audiences, from field engineers to executives and customers.
Preferred
- Experience supporting ISO 9001 or supplier quality audits; internal auditor or ASQ certification.
- Experience with Inductive Automation Ignition, SEL controllers, or IEC 61131 programming; Python or C# scripting.
- Background in BESS and hybrid solar-plus-storage projects, including OEM integration.
- Familiarity with market and regulatory frameworks (CAISO, ERCOT, PJM) and OT cybersecurity standards (NERC CIP, IEC 62443).
- Experience with new market entry or international deployments, especially LATAM; Spanish or Portuguese skills; experience leading globally distributed teams.
- Knowledge of PowerTrack, NetSuite, Jira, Confluence, and AutoCAD Electrical.
Location & Travel Location: Broomfield, CO (Hybrid, 2–3 days per week in office) Travel: 10–20%, including customer sites, commissioning, the production facility, and new market development
